Alternate Best Supporting 1948: Results

5. Lionel Barrymore in Key Largo- Barrymore gives a good performance who brings appropriate weight to the situations of his film.

Best Scene: Temple literally stands up to Rocco.
4. Robert Ryan in Act of Violence- A limited but effective turn of man filled with hate but also haunted by horrors.

Best Scene: Joe tells about his connection with Frank.
3. James Stewart in Rope- Although he was miscast Stewart though still gives it his all and manages to still deliver an effective turn.

Best Scene: Cadell sees what his theories has created.
2. Edward G. Robinson in Key Largo- The role fits like a glove and Robinson properly delivers as the villainous gangster.

Best Scene: Rocco tries to ignore the hurricane.
1. Alec Guinness in Oliver Twist- Guinness is almost invisible in his role as Fagin through his natural depiction of the character's age and particular manner. He only adds to through his ability to be warm and charming while being an evil schemer.

Im quite surprised by the amount of Stathis Giallelis votes lol I thought he was up there with Tom Tryon in The Cardinal and Paul Newman in Exodus as a dull and lifeless performance which cant carry an epic lol.

Can I second Cary Grant in Charade - a light performance but a perfectly judged one.

Are you going to include Sean Connery in your ranking of reviewed alternate nominees for 1963, or are you just going to stick with putting him in the overall ranking?

Louis Morgan said...

I'll leave him to the overall rank.

Giallelis's performance received such descriptions as "towering" while neither of the other two did. Also, I have to feel sorry for Tryon considering the incredible abuse Preminger put him through. At one point, Preminger brought Tryon's parents in, fired Tryon in front of them, and only rehired him once he was sure that the actor was sufficiently humiliated.

I can't wait for the Supporting half of the year. Brandon de Wilde and Robert Shaw plus whoever else (I'm hoping for at least one Great Escapist)

Robert MacFarlane said...

Don't forget Peter Sellers in the original Pink Panther for Supporting.

also Giallelis recieved such descrptions as boring and uncharismatic, theres a good reason why America America isnt a popular film and why Giallelis never became famous like Tryon. (cause its dull, lifeless and far too long).

It would be interesting to see Louis review him just to see which one of us is wrong lol.

also im not gonna suggest Claude Rains for Twlight Of Honor 63 supporting simply because he ll probably finish last lol.

I should quickly say that I won't be doing Antal Pager - Drama Of The Lark because I could not find a version with English Subtitles or even an English script for the film.

I'm a big fan of AMERICA AMERICA and definitely think Giallelis should be reviewed (personally, I think he does quite well). I'm also a fan of THE CARDINAL, but I'll admit Tryon's performance isn't its strongest element.

Mastroianni is a must.

Maybe Kazuo Hasegawa in REVENGE OF A KABUKI ACTOR? It's a FASCINATING film, and his performance is a pretty vital part of it.
