My wild and probably inaccurate guess:

1. Mifune
2. McQueen
3. Mastroianni
4. Bogarde
5. Courtenay

Let the debunking commence!

8 1/2's really more of a director's film isn't it?

Wow... no one has mentioned Burt Lancaster for The Leopard? My overall winner for this year.

Of these 5 I've only seen Mastroianni and McQueen (I was not so impressed by him when I've seen The Great Escape)... so I don't know

ive seen all of them, Mifune I think will win but its not a guarantee, Mastroianni has yet to score a 5, this will be his 5 I think, Billy Liar is a terrific british comedy/kitchen sink and Tom Courtenay is great in it, McQueen was good too but more iconic than good, Bogarde I think will finish last I thought he was solid.

Total crapshoot.

@Anonymous: Yeah, one could certainly make that argument. Judging by Psifonian's predictions, he may think that. Certainly the main attraction was Fellini. However, I would argue Mastroianni did an excellent job of carrying the film on his back while also creating a semi-voyeuristic look a Fellini himself, because let's face it, Guido was Fellini.

I would also recommend Stuart Burge's version of Uncle Vanya, starring Michael Redgrave as Vanya and Laurence Olivier as Astrov. It's the best English version of Chekhov's masterpiece

Robert MacFarlane said...

@ Michael: What, you never saw Vanya on 42nd Street, or did you just not like it?

Bogarde all the way, a perfect performance!

Dirk Bogarde - The Servant

Maurice Ronet - Le Feu Follet - by Louis Malle.

Tom Courtenay - Billy Liar

These are the 3 great male performances of 1963. I would give the award to Marcello for La Dolce Vita in 1960.
