5. Jack Nicholson in The Pledge- I have to say that my winner was easy to choose I had a hard time deciding the order of the rest as I like all of them. I hate to have to put Nicholson here as I really like his quiet downplayed work here a great deal even if the film botches his characterization somewhat by rushing things.
4. Ryan Gosling in The Believer- Gosling gives a performance better than his film gives a fascinating portrayal of a man made by his inconsistencies.
3. Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge!- The film gave me a headache, but McGregor managed to clear it up through his passionate charming portrayal that belts his character's blunt feelings on love no matter how stupid they may be.
2. Billy Bob Thornton in The Man Who Wasn't There- Thornton is all about his distinct characterization here which is a wonderfully deadpan performance that manages to bring us into his character's story, even when his character would just rather go back to cutting hair.
1. Gene Hackman in The Royal Tenenbaums- Well my second favorite actor does it again with his winning turn here as the patriarch of the title family. He is a devilish delight in his comedic scenes, but as well quite moving and believable as his character slowly becomes a better man.

I'd also recommend Lagaan. It's an Indian Hindi-language epic that's really, really long, but is excellent and has some really good male work, particularly by Aamir Khan as the lead and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in a supporting role.
A critic friend of mine swears by Moni Moshonov in A Late Marriage. He told me that even a non-Hebrew speaker can tell the clever use of dialects in his performance.

Well despite being weak on characterization Chan usually does have some sort of charm in his performances, and unlike so many I have never found Chris Tucker to be that annoying, well except in the Fifth Element.
I love how you listed Baldwin in FF. I'm a huge fan of those games, and even I didn't have the heart to watch it.
Did you enjoy Monster's Inc.? I personally really like the movie, and while I don't by any means think any of the voice performances were brilliant, I really don't think Billy Crystal was that bad.

I really hated Final Fantasy SW, I liked Final Fantasy Advent Children more.
Advent Children was no prize either. Shameless fanservice at best. If only Square gave a shit about FF6.

I agree about FF6, Kefka is one truly great villain, the most heartbreaking moment for me in that is when Celes trys to commit suicide, truly heartbreaking =(.
Kefka and Kuja (from IX) would be my favorite two Final Fantasy villains
@RatedRStar: I always get teary eyed with that scene too. I actually saved Cid in one playthrough. I should have let him die, considering the story loses impact because of that. FF6 is also one of two games where I actually find its huge cast of characters all endearing (the other is Persona 4).
@koook160 I always wanted to play Persona 4, I watched a bit of the animated show (I like the murder mystery plot about it) What did you make of FFIX (my personal fave) and its characters, plus added bonus, in my opinion, the first ever transexual main Villain XD lol
