5. Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road- DiCaprio certainly tries as hard as he possibly can in the role, but unfortunately his performance never quite comes together in the way the film wants it to.
4. Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino- Eastwood shows his usual strong presence here, and uses his unique individualistic screen persona brilliantly here.
3. Michael Fassbender in Hunger- Fassbender gives a strong performance showing the incredible unshakable drive in his character.
2. Colin Farrell in In Bruges- Farrell proves himself an extremely capable actor here as he creates both a energetically hilarious performance as well as quite a moving portrait of guilt.
1. Brendan Gleeson in In Bruges- This year is quite a terrible year for the academy missing out on such strong work for the over the top mannerisms of Penn and Langella as well as just the extreme blandness of Pitt. They missed out on this great performance by Brendan Gleeson that is a unique very moving portrait of a career killer who is anything but cold blooded, and also to his credit Gleeson is simply hilarious especially due to his chemistry with his co-stars of Farrell and Ralph Fiennes.

Damn, I was one off! If I had switched Farrell and Fassbender, I would have won.
Ah, man, naahhh. Not to Fassy? Oh well, at least it went to one of the micks. Man, I thought the academy loved to reward actors for stepping out of their comfort zone and all that stuff, like Farrell, or never before recognized veterans like Gleeson, or previously complete unknowns, especially young ones, like Fassy.
Anyways, I am please if not thrilled by the results.
1947 is an odd choice lol as I cant think of anyone from that year =).
I can think of lots for 46 lol just cant think of any for 47, perhaps Mitchum in Out Of The Past but thats all I remember.

Anonymous: I liked Bale as Batman and I think he is best serious portrayal of the character. I particularly like his Bruce Wayne, and I really don't have a problem with the voice for the most part. I do think if he had cut out the voice with his final confrontation at the very end it would have been quite powerful though.
Also I certainly will keep Nicholson in mind for that year.
I agree with pretty much everything you said about Bale.
I amit Bale is a great Batman/Bruce Wayne but the voice is over the top sometimes .
Louis: Why is Renner ranked on your list? Is it because it was released in Italy in 2008? Also, I couldn't agree more about the Academy's utter futility in picking its nominees this year, though I must admit that their choices are in line with nominations in past years. Did Bale not make your ranking of this year or is he somebody like Judd Nelson whom you would review later if you were to return to this year?
Everybody Else: He is doing 1947 next because I was one of a few people to predict 1985 correctly and that's the year I chose, something I did mainly because I couldn't think of a year and wanted to hear what Louis thought of Mitchum in Out of the Past.

Have you watched Elegy. i think Ben Kingsley's performance in that film is quite good, and I really love his scenes with Patricia Clarkson. I was just curious because I didn't notice him on your list.

Jared Leto in Chapter 27 would also be a good performance to watch and rank.

Song Kang-ho deserves a mention as Tae-goo in 'The Good, the Bad, the Weird' as well. Although a big goofball, Tae-goo has moments of being philosophical and even intimidating.
