Best Supporting Actor 1975: Results

5. Jack Warden in Shampoo- Warden is descent and humorous enough in the stock role of a hapless rich guy always being fooled by some hip young guy.
4. Chris Sarandon in Dog Day Afternoon- Sarandon in his two scenes is great creating an interesting character as well as a complex a believable relationship with Pacino's character.
3. Brad Dourif in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest- Dourif adds well to his film giving a heartbreaking performance as a very troubled young man that effectively adds to the ensemble and has one truly great individual moment.
2. George Burns in The Sunshine Boys- Burns gives a very enjoyable and funny dead pan performance. He never budges an inch and is entertaining in every scene.
1. Burgess Meredith in Day of the Locust- Coming down to two aging vaudevillian only makes this race even closer. This choice was one of my hardest to make in the category, and really they are both equally great in their own ways, and this is really a case I don't have much of a reason otherwise than Meredith is terrific in his role of both a tragic and inspiring man who seems to always be on death door yet there is always a great deal of joy and life in him as well.
Deserving Performances:
Robert Shaw in Jaws
John Cazale in Dog Day Afternoon
Charles Durning in Dog Day Afternoon
Max von Sydow in Three Days of the Condor

Wow! I totally didn't see that top 2 order coming at all. Also, I know you said that Shaw was deserving, but where would you have ranked him? Great job with the blog. What are you going to do next? I'd love to see you work on the two actress categories, director, or picture (or all of the above). I'd also love to see some extra pages related to what you've already done here, but I won't list them unless you want me to so that I don't take up too much space.

List away if you wish Michael. Also Shaw is great but I would have to watch Jaws again to know just exactly how great he is.

I think the most obvious, at least for me, would be ranking all of the nominees, or at least the winners. On some of your performance reviews you give your opinion on a film before talking about the performance while others you just said what the movie was about. I'd like it if you sort of list the films that you would recommend and at different levels (i.e. essential, highly recommended, recommended, etc.). I guess the last one would be a consolidated and perhaps more complete listing of deserving performances by category and year including if you think that any of the nominees in either category should've been nominated in the opposite category (i.e. Pacino in 1972). As part of the same list, it would be cool of you maybe gave a list of what would be your preferred 5 nominees or at least your personal winner if it happens to be different from your winner out of the given nominees. Continuing your page with the review of Cazale and Brooks (and Garland) could be a great way to go about talking about those performances You felt were especially deserving.

just do supp actress first it what most want i feel.

or you could choose a year and swap all 5 nominees for 5 of your own for example

1997 best actress

jodie foster contact
pam grier jackie brown
michelle pfeiffer a thousand acres
joan allen the ice storm
jessica lange a thousand acres

then review and rank.

Wow, so Meredith won! How surprising! But then again, he was really terrific.

I'd like to thank you for your reviews. Although I haven't always agreed with your rankings, I learned a lot from them :) Reading your blog was a truly fantastic experience to every movie fan, including me :)

I agree with Michael Patison - I'd love to see the complete ranking of the performances and a video of your winners, just like in the case of Best Actor category :)Then, I wish you continued with deserving performances: Reviewing them year by year, than posting your own personal list of the nominees (I believe you did something like that in Best Actor '74). But then again, everything you would do will be fantastic and worth reading :)

Awesome as always Louis =), only thing that I think needs updating is William Hurt in Broadcast News and the blog is complete.

Wow, I'm very surprised. And sad that it was the last year. Anyway, as I expected, you finished a great year with great reviews. :) Congrats! :)

Meredith was actually really pissed that he lost. :D I guess I can see now why. :)))

Thanks to everyone for the support, I hope everyone likes my new plan for Best Actor.

Michael: I will try to stay consistent with rating the films a little bit, as I toyed with the idea of doing best picture which is why I became so inconsistent. I think I will probably go back an add whether or not I recommend each film.

RatedRStar: I promise I will get back to Hurt.
