Best Supporting Actor 1987: Results

5. Sean Connery in The Untouchables- Connery has little to do in his role besides act tough and give inspirational talks both which he does adequately enough but never to any sort of amazing degree.
4. Denzel Washington in Cry Freedom- Washington gives a fine quietly passionate performance that avoids the problems some of his other performances suffer from.
3. Vincent Gardenia in Moonstruck- Gardenia gives an effectively colorful performance that only succeeds in adding to his film.
2. Morgan Freeman in Street Smart- Freeman gives a great performance excelling in both showing the odd charm and charisma equally well with the terrifying brutality of the same man.
1. Albert Brooks in Broadcast News- This for me was a rather close choice between the top two, although I really should not have had to make because Brooks gives really more of a lead than a supporting performance. Brooks either way gives a great performance that balances the different aspects of his character making a winning performance. He gives a charming humorous performance that finds the right emotional tone throughout the film.
Deserving Performances:
Vincent D'Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket
R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket
Mandy Patinkin in The Princess Bride

I know!!!! The leading nominations are such bs! Fassbender Oldman and Dujardin gave the three best performances this year! I'd replace Brad Pitt and Demain Bichir with Oldman and Fassy in an instant!

I agree that both Oldman and Fassbender should have been nominated. I personally thought that Pitt was great. While Bichir was touching, I think that he should be replaced by Oldman and that DiCaprio should be replaced by Fassbender. Yes, DiCaprio was good, but his periodic overacting and mugging became annoying.

I somewhat disagree with your assessment of Connery, but that's beside the point. I totally agree with Brooks. Broadcast News is one of my favorite films and I am constantly crushed when I remember that nobody today, not even James L. Brooks himself, seems to be able to write smart romcoms anymore.

What did you thing of Ian Bannen in Hope and Glory? While not particularly earth-shattering, I thought that he added something to the angry old grandfather character that had never really been done before.

I have not seen Hope and Glory.

Another deserving performance for me that I hadn't even thought about earlier is Robert Downey, Jr. in Less Than Zero. The film is less than desirable, but Downey's performance is great as a drug addict. His good performance, though at his own admission, almost definitely was aided by his struggle with drug addiction at the time in real life.
