Best Actor 1997: Results

5. Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting- Damon  has some good moments but they are overshadowed in what feels like a put on as the genius young "man of the streets" .
 4. Dustin Hoffman in Wag the Dog- Hoffman is entertaining and the best thing in Wag the Dog but it is just not that much overall.
3. Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets- Nicholson has some good moments in this film but the script makes a change in his character that Nicholson is unable to compensate for.
2. Peter Fonda in Ulee's Gold- Fonda creates an interesting portrait of an interesting man. Staying very quiet but giving a lot of power to his performance.
1. Robert Duvall in The Apostle- Duvall creates an original and fascinating character in the Apostle, which creates many powerful scenes in the film.

I figured Duvall would be your pick :)

Wow, I thought Hoffman would come in third! What year is next?

Sage Slowdive: You figured correctly.

Joe Burns: Although Nicholson was more mixed overall than Hoffman, I thought Nicholson just was more overall. I haven't decided yet which year is next.

I recommend 1969 or 1974 for your next year :]

Good suggestions Sage. I'll probably do 1974, since I can't find Anne of a Thousand days for immediate viewing.

What'd you think of James Cromwell and Kevin Spacey's supporting performances in L.A. Confidential.

Need to watch it again to really say for sure on Cromwell but I thought Spacey was great.
