Louis: So you've given 90 fives for 2000 onwards so far, with '06, '07 & '14 remaining.

1. Walken
2. Pacino
3. Billingsley
4. Woods
5. Ogata

Louis: I Highly recommend watching Vera Drake for Imelda Staunton's performance for Actress '04 Lead when you finish the alternative years.

Also just to be clear is Sandra Bullock a five now, if so what made you upgrade her score.

@RatedRStar: Mine too, I'm surprised Woods hasn't worked with Cronenberg since, they fit perfectly together.

Luke: Yes she is a five. As I said when I gave my original thoughts that a re-watch could move her up. I re-watched the film and it did. My thoughts are essentially the same, so to speak.

RatedRStar: In regard to Cheung that's why I wrote "I guess". I probably should have just left the fifth off though as I'd only give her a 2.5 anyway.

What made you bump Paltrow up to a five? Her performance is actually growing on me, she was just amazing. By the way, predictions:
1. Walken
2. Pacino
3. Billingsley
4. Woods
5. Ogata

Never mind about Paltrow, I've just red your comment on 2004 Supporting's results.

4 nominees for Best Actress 2004, and now I know why the 2000s are probably the worst for the Oscars in terms of snubs and decisions.

In fact, out of every decade, I think the 2000s are the worst for films overall for the oscars, either that or the 1980s

@Louis, also one more thing about One Nite in Mongkok, you got to see Sam Lee, one of my HK winners, (the guy who sticks his massive fat tongue out of the car lol) would it surprise you if I told you that he is one of my favorite hong kong actors lol, you must be so excited to see him (and ROY CHEUNG =D) in Beast Cops when your review Anthony Wong lol.

If people are wondering why I requested Ogata despite me not seeing the movie, it's because my critic friend/mentor I sometimes talk about LOVES this performance and especially loves the movie. I'm curious what Louis would think.

I would have liked to have seen the following this year:
David Villalpando, El Norte
Charles Martin Smith, Never Cry Wolf
Sean Penn, Bad Boys
Mel Brooks, To Be or Not To Be
Tom Cruise, Risky Business
Eddie Murphy, Trading Places

JamDenTel said...

Louis: will you factor Charles Martin Smith in Never Cry Wolf and De Niro in The King of Comedy into your rankings?

Luke Higham said...

JamDelTel: De Niro's '82 by Louis's rules with a Dec '82 release date in Iceland.

Thoughts/ratings on:

Sessue Hayakawa in Three Came Home
Charlie Chaplin in Limelight
Van Heflin in Act of Violence

And will you be reviewing Lew Ayres in All Quiet on the Western Front?

I'm kinda hoping Ogata gets reviewed first, since I only saw him without subtitles, so I really can't say for sure how much I think Louis will like him.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Wait, why would you watch it without subtitles?

Michael McCarthy said...

I couldn't find any version with subtitles. I knew the story already so I had a general idea of what was going on, but I probably missed a lot of the finer points.

Louis Morgan said...

Michael Patison: I really don't have much to say about the Mean Girls cast since its another I have not seen since it came out, and I have to admit I was not overly invested when I watched it back then. As I recall I thought they were all fine.

JamDenTel:

DeNiro is indeed 82 for me. I have not watched Smith's performance at the moment although I always try to expand the field during the reviews.

Anonymous:

Hayakawa - 4(He once again plays a Japanese Commandant although this time with a softer edge. Hayakawa is good in having the right strict command while eliciting the right sort of sympathy by portraying the man as seemingly good at heart. It's a less complex role than his Saito but Hayakawa does very well with it)

Chaplin - 4.5(I actually might argue this to be his best sound performance as it's a great sendoff for his old tramp character. He brings such a gentle charm to the role but along with it the right pathos of an aging man who knows he's long past his prime. It's very poignant work, and the most comfortable I've seen him in a sound film)

Heflin - 4.5(Heflin's always been a very underrated actor as whenever he has a emotionally demanding role he completely delivers. This is the case here as he so effective portrays the pervasive growing guilt of his character. This actually could have been a five if the film was a little less brief)

Ayres is a definite for his year.

Who are you?! Your insights are better than most critics. You clearly know your stuff and dont just write emotional fan boy stuff. Walken for Dead Zone? Finally someone gets it. One of the most heartbreaking performances ever. Way more depth than Deer Hunter. Just curious I feel Heavens Gate was unfairly slagged as well, thoughts?

Louis Morgan said...

Thank you for the kind words. I have not seen Heavens Gate, but I will give it a chance someday as I've liked heavily maligned films before.

I think you will like it. Its not perfect but far from the travesty critics said it was. It is a challenging piece of cinema but well worth it. I also thought The Searchers was bizzarly ignored in at least 3 categories.
