Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2018: Results

10. Russell Hornsby in The Hate U Give - Hornsby gives a very strong performance realizing the intense determination of his character based around both his past hardships and his genuine love for his family.

Best Scene: How to behave when pulled over.
9. Peter Bogdonavich in The Other Side of the Wind - Bogdonavich's performance, 40 years in its making, is a surprisingly nuanced portrayal of the vulnerable ego of a man who built his own legacy by imitating his mentor.

Best Scene: Trying to tell Hanneford the truth.
8. Brian Tyree Henry in If Beale Street Could Talk - Henry gives the highlight of his banner year in his moving portrayal of essentially memory both those of a loving friendship and a harrowing traumatic experience.

Best Scene: His scene.
7. Alessandro Nivola in Disobedience - Nivola disappears into his role as one of the pillars of a Jewish community and gives a particularly powerful portrayal of a man coming to terms with his beliefs and how they relate to his friendship and his marriage.

Best Scene: "Choose"
6. Linus Roache in Mandy - Roache gives an amazing turn capturing both the hilarity and the horror of a wannabe prophet with severe delusions and pathetic desperation.

Best Scene:  Presenting himself.
5. Nicholas Hoult in The Favourite - Hoult once again is given a meaty role and once again makes the most of it in his masterful portrayal of a vicious wit and ambition.

Best Scene: Abigail's Offer.
4. Russell Crowe in Boy Erased - Crowe gives one of his best performances in his nuanced portrayal of a father failing then slowly learning to understand his homosexual son.

Best Scene: Ford Dealership.
3. Tom Waits in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - Waits delivers a wonderful one man show that creates such an empathetic journey in one man's search for gold.

Best Scene: "You Didn't Hit Nothin' Important"
2. Steven Yeun in Burning - Yeun gives a masterful portrayal of an egotistical detachment that creates a most unnerving sort of possible evil.

Best Scene: Burning Greenhouses.
1. Jeff Bridges in Bad Times At the El Royale - Good prediction Michael McCarthy, and AnonymousBridges takes the top spot overall for me as he delivers one of his best performances. This is giving a thoroughly engaging turn in giving so much life to every facet of his character from the various levels of the facade he puts on, the camaraderie he finds, and most of all his absolutely heartbreaking depiction of a man with dementia.

Best Scene: Describing his memory loss.

Bridges for the win!

And I like the little touch with the ratings next to each actor

Good idea Louis. :)

Louis: Ratings and thoughts on the rest of your 4.5, 4 and 3.5s.

And thoughts on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and rating & thoughts on Driver.

Louis: your thoughts on The House That Jack Built and the ratings and thoughts on the cast?

Louis: I do not know if you've done it yet, but what are the most overrated directors for you?

Mitchell Murray said...

Really pleased to see a win for Bridges, honestly, and I can't really argue against the rest of the top 10, either.

Also, I just thought I'd mention that my review of Lady Gaga is now posted:

Sorry for the delay. Call it...um...technical difficulties.

Louis: Lastly, your Female rankings with ratings. 5s to your lowest 4.

And ratings and thoughts on any other Lead Actor performances you would give a 4 or 4.5 to.

What are the Overall Rating for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in 2018?

PS = I hope you do not forget two great performances from last year: actress Karine Teles in Loving and actor Matt Dillon in The House That Jack Built.

RatedRStar said...

I originally read that score as a minus one lol on the overall xD, wouldnt have been surprised.

Not much point in suggesting anyone, never is whenever its the current movie year since I think the lineup speaks for itself.

Louis: Could I also get ratings and thoughts on the non-saves.

Luke Higham said...

For Lead.

RatedRStar said...

Louis: I so wanna see Buster Scruggs having finally seen that trailer for it, only disappointment is that you said Tyne Daly gives the weakest performance in a strong field of performances, gah I have fond memories of watching Cagney and Lacey when I was younger lol so good.

Luke:

The film itself is a sad disappointment. I actually liked it for the first hour or so, but its plot ends up becoming a strict repetition. It is far to akin to really The Baron of Munchhausen but not nearly as fun. It tries instead to become something about artistic representation to which it completely loses itself again and again. It's a shame as none of it really ends up coming together other than the secondary titular character. That performance carries the film, but it's to its detriment that he's really a supporting character.

Pryce - (Pryce is an utter delight here and does evoke John Neville as the Baron in sort of embracing the larger than life style of his character so beautifully. Pryce's work has this marvelous grandiose energy that just is winning every moment he is on screen. He is hilarious but also really brings such a conviction in the heroic demeanor of the character. He creates such a striking character through it and it is a shame he's supporting as he's the one thing that kept me going through the film's rougher patches. Pryce's work though is consistently powerful portrayal of a most sincere delusion of grandeur. This is as he makes every grand pose, every heroic declaration exactly as they should be though refined with a certain daffiness fitting to a mad man.)

Driver - 3.5(Driver gives a fine straight man performance, and in a way you can kind of see him going for 90's era Depp, who originally played the part. In he brings a similar comic near detachment to the part, that actually is pretty effective for the most part. The problem is the film doesn't really know what to do with his character beyond just having him go through the same repetitive scenario again and again. Driver is good with what he has but it unfortunately does not do enough with him.)

Forster - (Forster gives a moving portrayal of the gruff father as to be expected honestly, and thankfully has far less of a caricature to work with than was the case with the Descendants. Forster's very good though in finding the blunt attitude of his character though finding enough nuance in his confrontational scenes to always be able to show where there is a sense of love for his kids, even if it is very specifically shown. His best moments though are in his reactions to his wife where Forster is heartbreaking by actually being so unassuming in reflecting the very quite dismay in his wife's dementia. He shows though it well as trying to put on the bright optimism even as he struggles to maintain the show.)

Lundgren & Munteanu - (These two together are a special ingredient in making Creed a terrific sequel, as it is one element that is superior to the standard brawler that was the opponent in the first film. It is pretty amazing as Lundgren really delivers a convincing portrayal of bitterness along with Munteanu who manages to show the rage of the character fueled by that influence. His best scene though is with the special cameo and it is amazing as he manages to be rather heartbreaking in the moment. Lundgren is that himself in the final fight as he makes the towel scene such a powerful one as he manages to produce such a genuine reaction in the moment.)

Russell - (Wow, like John David Washington, Russell's got his old man's charisma. He also can funnel it into his swagger and never feel like a copy of his old man, he rather just feels like his old man. It is pretty marvelous actually as he delivers that sort of sardonic Kurt Russell turn from a Carpenter film himself, and just feels that it is exactly as it should be. If they are remaking Escape from NY (don't) Russell certainly is a fit for Snake.)

Louis Morgan said...

Hammer - (Hammer does a great sleazeball slick routine. I like in his early scenes though as he presents such a good PR face in his sort of impassioned delivery of what he's trying to accomplish with his work, hollow as it is. He's then great by throwing out any pomp or circumstance in the whole thing by really laying on the sleaze at every point, particularly the way his delivery accentuates the horse member featured in his proposition.)

Shannon - (Always nice to see him not as a maniac for once. Shannon gives a fine turn here in portraying the pent up frustrations of the son who is just struggling to do the right thing with an earned exasperation. He does well in showing how others could see his character as a villain, but manages to show at every turn the honest devotion within those frustrations.)

Rhodes - (I have to admit I found whole film pretty disposable but he certainly gives a nice charismatic turn.)

Omar:

Ganz gives a striking a lurid performance, I'm going to get into far more of that possibly to the dismay of all, but one must do what one must do.

Matt:

Not Sure.

Brazinterma:

I'm going to try to watch Destroyer and few others first.

RatedRStar:

Oh she's more than fine, just process of elimination in a way, as no one gives a bad performance in that film.

Charles:

1. Christopher Walken in Seven Psychopaths
2. Ben Foster in Hell or High Water
3. Tom Hardy in The Revenant
4. Mark Strong in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
5. Nicholas Hoult in Mad Max: Fury Road
6. Jeff Bridges in Bad Times At the El Royale
7. Sylvester Stallone in Creed
