Overall, I'm quite content with the winners (managed to get 100% accuracy with my predictions!). "Three Billboards" would have been a more deserved winner for both picture and original screenplay (especially in the latter), nonetheless, "The Shape of Water" was also a great film, so no big complaints here. Very strong year for acting (apart from the supporting actress), although best actor should have gone to Day-Lewis (still, Oldman finally getting and giving a wonderful speech was worth it). I'm very happy with "Dunkirk" winning, I personally would have given it for the score, too.

As for the ceremony itself, it was pretty tame and boring (Jet-ski? Really? That was the best they could come up with?). To be honest, I was expecting more sex scandal jokes (especially regarding Spacey), but I suppose they wanted to play it safe and avoid anything raunchy. I probably loved the best the segment with Gerwig and Nanjiani - instead of focusing on a political message they appealed to the universality of film experience, regardless of any factors.

I think I'm the only one who's really surprised about The Shape of Water. Even though it was supposedly neck and neck with Three Billboards, I would have predicted Get Out and Lady Bird before TSOW.

Unknown said...

I have no clue for predictions with these lineups :))

Overall, I quite satisfied with all categories this year. Although Three Billboard was way deserving for the best picture, TSOW is an okay winner. The only issue with the ceremony for me, well, sadly is the feminism stuff. It's like watching cliche after cliche after cliche, freaking boring and frustrated. Nevertheless, so glad that Oldman and Rockwell brought home the trophy they deserved :)

Outside of Peele, Deakins, and honestly Ivory, I was not a fan of most of the winners. I guess I’m glad Del Toro, Oldman, Rockwell, and Janney will have “Academy Award Winner” in front of their names now, I just wish it was for works I actually liked.

I'm gonna hold my predictions for now.

With the Oscars, i agree with Robert. I think Deakins was my favorite win of the night. At least Blade Runner got 2.

I leapt off the couch when Deakins won.

As great as Hoffman might be in Synecdoche, New York, I don't think he'll beat Gleeson or Farewell.

Well other than The Shape Of Water taking me by surprise and getting best picture, the oscars this year were fairly cut and dry. Oldman's the win I'm the least passionate about, but its still nice that he finally has one. I don't mind the other 3 acting wins in the slightest, nor do I have a problem with the majority of the awards on the whole.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Louis: Do you think Shelley Winters would have won in 1951 if she was placed in supporting for A Place in the Sun.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I think you need to review Cassel's work for both parts, because it seems to be a similar case to Del Toro in Che.

Luke Higham said...

Mesrine is a 2 part film.

I thought Nicholas Tse was lead for The Beast Stalker while Cheung and Kai Chi were supporting?

Anonymous: Well, he could review him during the supporting round. Louis has reviewed Supporting performances in Lead rounds before. And Supporting Actor's fairly weak in contenders.

With the lineup that's been made, there isn't one that I would like to see taken out.

Calvin Law said...

And for the Oscars on the whole, very happy.

I was pretty happy with the winners in general, maybe could do with more surprises next years from a winners and nominees perspective.

Mitchell Murray said...

Now normally I don't predict these kind of things, but with this awards season finally at a close, I thought I'd throw out some performances that are on my radar for next year:

Ryan Gosling (First Man)
Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here)
Colin Firth (The Mercy)
Steve Carell (The Women of Marwen)
Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce (Mary, Queen of Scots)
Hugh Jackman (The Front Runner)

RatedRStar said...

2018 looks pretty weak when you look at the film lineups, so many sequels, I hope there will be some surprises, I guess the thing about 2018 is that unlike last year where everybody knew Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread would be Oscar contenders, its hard to see where they are for 2018.

Luke Higham said...

Mitchell: You can forget about Firth in The Mercy. It has already been released in the UK and doesn't look like it would have any staying power come next January. It's essentially another Railway Man(Career best), though whether he's better in The Mercy has yet to be seen. Honestly, I hope he could be a Supporting Contender for Kursk, Vinterberg could get the best out of him I think.

RatedRStar said...

Kursk is definately the film I am most curious about.

RatedRStar said...

I would love to dream and fast forward to fall this year, Kingdom Hearts 3, and seeing Kursk have like a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Matthias Schoenaerts a leading actor Oscar contender, a person can dream.

Mitchell Murray said...

A quick online search makes Kursk look far more promising, honestly. Schoenaerts, plus the final film role of Michael Nyqvist.

Tahmeed:.

No as Streetcar was seen as an acting juggernaut. It took the vet to take down Brando, Winters was still a relative newcomer.

Luke:

The two Mesrine parts had two separate releases so I will consider them as separate releases, like Nakadai in 59 for the Human Condition I and II. My review though will entail both parts. He will have two different spots though in the overall.

Anonymous:

Nick Cheung was the one who competed for the best actor prizes, however I have not watched the film. I will before lead is over though, and I'll review Tse here if I feel he is lead.

Louis: Your cast for an 80's and 90's Nightcrawler?

Rhys-Davies - (A great underrated voice as he delivers such a jovial grandeur that is rather unique quality. By the way I wish he'd be in more things.)

Anonymous:

Oh his voice would be perfect, and considering you don't need to take the mask off he'd be perfect all together.

Bryan:

Yes though Gyllenhaal seems to need to tap into that sort of kinetic energy, whereas it is this sort of raw madness with Cage that is always there to some extent.

Anonymous:

Nightcrawler 80's:

Lou Bloom: James Woods
Nina Romina: Lauren Bacall
Rick: Joe Pantoliano
Joe: Murray Hamilton

90's:

Lou Bloom: Nicolas Cage
Nina Romina: Faye Dunaway
Rick: John Leguizamo
Joe: Bruce Dern
