There's no way in hell Attenborough is losing his win.

1. Fresnay(So glad you decided to review him)
2. Power
3. Welles
4. Rains
5. Numasaki

Charles H said...

Oh, and who requested Numasaki?

Calvin Law said...

Yeah Attenborough is keeping this win.

Louis: I know you're not the biggest fan of Foxx in Django (though I liked him a great deal), but who would you have preferred as the lead? I think the original choice Will Smith would've been worse actually.

Louis Morgan said...

Michael K. Williams

Louis Morgan said...

Charles:

Michael McCarthy if I'm not mistaken.

Louis: Although Ford was good in Trial, who do you think would have been better in the role?

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Kirk Douglas who also previously worked with Robson and Kennedy in Champion.

Also on the point I need to make a correction on my top ten leading actor performances of the fifties, since Douglas in Paths of Glory should have been my #5.

Anonymous said...

Louis since my previous comment got lost, what would be your cast and director for a Prisoner of Zenda 2010's?

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

The Prisoner of Zenda (2010's directed by Matthew Vaughn)

Common/King Rudolph: Michael Fassbender
Princess Flavia: Alicia Vikander
Colonel Zapt: Ben Kingsley
Duke Michael: James D'Arcy
Antoinette: Claire Foy
Captain Fritz: Taron Egerton
Rupert: Domhnall Gleeson

Hey Louis, have you thought about watching The Crown at some point.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Oh I've thought about it, just another one I would need to find the time for.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: And what've you been watching on TV recently.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Only Legion at the moment.

Luke Higham said...

Louis, will you be watching these mini-series in future.

Yes, No or Maybe for each one.

Band Of Brothers and The Pacific
War & Peace (2016)
Shogun
Angels In America
Little Dorrit
Jesus Of Nazareth
Longford
Elizabeth I (2006)
Lonesome Dove
Brideshead Revisited

I'm not against seeing any of those miniseries. I've actually seen Jesus of Nazareth even, it just has been a very long time.

I never got the chance to see Power because when I did I saw Garfield in Force Of Evil instead and the film seemed to be lost then.

Claude Rains look great in this lineup doesnt he =D =D =D.

I'm sure they will all get good scores. I feel Colman and Attenborough will keep their spots at 2nd and 1st. Fresnay will probably take 3rd.

Louis: Who's more likely to get a five in future out of these two pairs.

Redmayne/Cumberbatch
C. Murphy/Whishaw

Calvin Law said...

Luke: I'd say Cumberbatch (who's gotten a couple of strong 4.5's already) and Murphy (both he and Whishaw have gotten a slew of thankless roles, but Murphy seems more likely to get out of this fit sooner).

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: For me, Cumberbatch with ease. Now, when it comes to Murphy and Whishaw, there should be a five star performance from Dunkirk and the sea portion of the plot with Rylance and Murphy appears to be the most interesting on paper, yet if Louis covers 2012 before 2017, Whishaw's work in The Hollow Crown: Richard II is a must-watch and an easy five in my opinion.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: For Film Thoughts. You've skipped over:
Apocalypse Now
Braveheart
Shaun Of The Dead
Hot Fuzz
The World's End
Zodiac
The Assassination Of Jesse James
No Country For Old Men
Mad Max: Fury Road

Reference: Eric Stoltz/Mask

Is anyone watching Big Little Lies or intends to? Apparently it's very good and very well acted.

So I just saw Before I Fall. Not a particularly great film, but holy shit Zoey Deutch is great in it.

Charles:

Harry Dean Stanton:

1. Travis tells his Story - Paris, Texas
2. His Scene - The Straight Story
3. Explaining where he's been - Paris, Texas
4. Strange Murder - Wild At Heart
5. Becoming a Father - Paris, Texas
6. Holding up the Bank - Straight Time
7. Crazy Caller - Wild At Heart
8. Brett Finds the Cat - Alien
9. Hitting the Card Game - Straight Time
10. The truth is revealed - Wise Blood

Haven't watched it in context but "Avenge Me!" is pretty amazing from Red Dawn as well.

Varun:

Thornton:

1. Giving Up - A Simple Plan
2. "I would kill this man" - Fargo
3. Fake girlfriend - A Simple Plan
4. The Elevator - Fargo
5. All of it - The Man Who Wasn't There (The genius of that performance is its exact consistency)
6. Bear Trap - Fargo
7. Fake Confession - A Simple Plan
8. Confrontation with son - Monster's Ball
9. Meeting Mr. Wrench - Fargo
10. Diner - Fargo

Luke:

Cumberbatch - Both he and Redmayne are hit and miss in general (well Redmanyne usually shoots some poor guy in the stands when he misses) but Cumberbatch hits far more often of the two as well as has the higher height currently.

Murphy/Whishaw - Honestly they have basically the same chance I think, both are very talented chaps who are often given thankless roles to support less talented chaps.

Well one can occasionally misplace a copy and paste, I'll get to them after I finish up Breaking Bad.

Louis, your top 10 Charlize Theron acting moments and Angelia Jolie?

Louis Morgan said...

Get Out is a very good horror comedy. It does technically stretch out its concept a bit though, I do think it could have been handled all in a Twilight Zone hour to be honest, and there is one comedic scene, that while funny, might sabotage the horror a bit too much given its placement in that I think at a certain point we should have been isolated along with Kaluuya's Chris, the film gives us a bit too much of a reprieve I feel. Having said that it's a very entertaining film with a strong cast, some laugh out loud moments, along with a genuinely creepy atmosphere throughout.

Kong Skull Island is indeed very stupid, with some clunky editing, a cliched ridden script, and some incredibly thin characters for the most part. Having said that I do think there is some fun to be had as it is often visually compelling, aside from its 3-d scenes (I saw it in 2-d) and the worst aurora borealis you'll ever see, and there is an actor by the name of John C. Reilly who apparently took it upon himself to save the movie.

Robert:

Not sure if I ever saw that episode.

Varun:

Theron:

1. Bus Stop - Monster
2. What Happened to the Green Place? - Mad Max: Fury Road
3. Job Interview - Monster
4. The Verdict - Monster
5. "Redemption" - Mad Max: Fury Road
6. Murder in the woods - Monster
7. "Remember Me" - Mad Max: Fury Road
8. Testimony - North Country
9. A Deal Gone Wrong - Mad Max: Fury Road
10. Hope - Mad Max: Fury Road

For Jolie a tad difficult as I have only found her Oscar nominated performances to be just fine, and the rest of her work forgettable if not bad.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Ratings and thoughts on the casts of both films and are you saving Kaluuya and Reilly.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Yes.

SPOILERS by the way.

Whitford - 4(Sort of typical Whitford but I mean that in a good way. He's a great uncool father which he then transitions quite naturally to the creepier side of things as the film takes its turn.)

Keener - 3.5(Interestingly she's always fairly consistent in that she starts slightly off-putting, but not creepy, then continues on that path only further to be a potential mother-in-law that really gets under the skin.)

Root - 3(Typically effective Root, very much in his wheelhouse.)

Williams - 4.5(She technically has the most extreme switch as the others more of ease into their alternate role she becomes it. Williams takes the right approach in this regard as in her early scenes she is properly very likable and natural importantly tricking you into believing she's on the level while she's tricking Chris as well. Then when she shifts it is brutally effective as she reveals such a cold detachment in her efforts, and is quite chilling particularly in her phone call scene.)

Howery - 3.5(Consistently very funny even if I'm not sure all of his scenes were placed perfectly.)

END OF SPOILERS

Hiddleston - 2.5(He's there, he's perfectly serviceable but he has no character to work with. He just kind of walks around and says things that need to be done. Again he does the job but there's just nothing there.)

Larson - 2(She's there, she's perfectly serviceable, most of the time, but she has no character to work with. She just kind of walks around and takes pictures. She does have a natural charm but I have to say she had a few very questionable, very weird line readings, though those lines were doing her no favors.)

Tian - 2(She certainly stood around just fine.)

Kebbell - 1.5(I have to say it Kebbell actually can't play an American. It's not just the accent, although that wasn't particularly good, but he just happens to be someone who looks English very specifically.)

Ortiz - (Bad at standing around)

Mitchell - (Okay at standing around)

Cordero - (Okay at standing around)

Mann - 1(Awful just awful. His whole arc, which he did have, didn't matter by his abysmal overacting in every scene particularly after the initial attack.)

Goodman - 3(Does a bit too much standing around himself but he has a bit of fun doing his conspiracy nut thing still seems wasted though.)

Jackson - 3(Very standard badass Jackson performance, which means still good if a bit uninspired)

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What did you think of Samuel L. Jackson's comments on Black Brits taking African American roles.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

In this particular case it is a little ridiculous as whoever is best for the role is best for the role. I mean if someone gets a role that means several other people had their role "taken" from them as well, regardless of nationality. I mean if Forrest Whitaker can be BRituSH, Daniel Kaluuya can be American.

Calvin Law said...

Louis: What about Keith Stanfield?

Calvin Law said...

Also, yeah, Kebbell has very British features for some reason. I have the same feeling about Benedict Cumberbatch, and actually to an extent Michael Fassbender who actually can do the accent well enough, it's just he doesn't 'look' right while doing it.

Calvin Law said...

Also, a year on what do we all think of Straight Outta Compton? I think Mitchell was the highlight in retrospect.

Charles H said...

Nice to finally see a bit of a mixed reaction for Get Out.

Calvin: To be honest, Straight Outta Compton did not sit with me well.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Louis: If your issue with Get Out was the last scene, I had a similar reaction. At first I wondered if the film should have had a darker ending, but then I realized it was pretty good bait and switch with the car door.

Also, you seemed to have the same reaction to Kong I had. Yeesh, what a mess.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Also, I'd go 5 for Allison Williams. Her phone scene is something I didn't even realize anyone could physically do.

Robert:

I was referring to the Police station scene which I think could have merely been mentioned as something that happened with the ending.

And in regards to Williams, yeah that was pretty amazing.

Calvin:

Stanfield - 3(Effectively creepy in his brief screen time by being just so off in everything that he does, than is rather effective in his short outburst.)

I do think the police station scene was probably too Key & Peele for its own good, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh my ass off.
