Well, that was something.

Louis Morgan said...

Also you have to give credit to the La La Land producers for handling it as well as they did.

Calvin Law said...

Interesting lineup, I'll sleep on it. And this whole night in general.

What a weird evening. At least it was a happy one.

That's true, they acted really classy. Shame 'cause that must have been very humiliating for them.

2.Fonda
3.Robinson

Damn, this is a tough one. I'd have preferred 1936, but whatever.

Louis: Apparently, Hackman was supposed to play Hirsch's role in Ordinary People. Would you have chosen him over Hirsch?

I was laughing when Warren Beatty was on screen. But when they said Moonlight won, i was like.....I was cussing at my TV the whole time Moonlight's producers were giving their speech.

Charles H said...

Robert: If you need help to stop laughing, just think of Hacksaw's editing win. :)

Álex Marqués said...

Wow, what a shock! It was not Beatty's fault though, they gave them the wrong envelope (that's why he was hesitating to read it). The La La Land's producers took it so well.

I loved the guy who just went "We lost, by the way. But uh, you know." As opposed to "Aw, FUCK! Are you *kidding* me?"

Anonymous said...

Denzel Washington looked pretty angry that he lost to Casey.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

I was in school and looked at the results, and aside from the Suicide Squad win, I'd say a brilliant bunch of winners.
Picture: La La Land was my 4th favorite film of the year, and Moonlight was my 6th. I can't complain at all about the latter winning, it's extremely deserved.
Actor: Affleck deserved this, and I'm glad those unproven allegations didn't hurt him. The only stupid thing is that on every Youtube video I see about his win, I see a bunch of trolls making this a racial thing.
Actress: My win for the year winning, couldn't be happier :)
Supporting Actor and Actress: Both so damn deserved.

As for the BP fiasco, it isn't either presenter's fault.

The reaction to Casey Affleck winning is pretty bad on twitter, also some of the reactions to Affleck winning like Denzel, Brie Larson and Alicia Vikander are very poor indeed.

Denzel Washingtons reaction was pretty bad when Casey thanked him.

Álex Marqués said...

Well, considering his allegations it's pretty understandable.

Considering Affleck more than likely did it (I read those reports, and they are DETAILED), I don't blame the icy reception to it, no matter how well-deserved his win was.

Yes since I'm sure Hackman would have been great, and has never had a problem taking or shining in smaller roles. Hirsch was fine though so that wasn't a terrible switch.

Interesting, I've always found the ending of High and Low strangely satisfying. I love the film (more than you, fight me Louis ;)) but for some reason I just find it so cathartic that Gondo has done the right thing and achieved something despite the setbacks. Of course it's also underlined with a certain tragedy. Man, I'm gonna watch it sometime soon again.

Calvin Law said...

Also,

1. Gabin
2. Donat
3. Colman
4. Robinson
5. Fonda

Louis Morgan said...

Calvin:

Oh yeah!!! I love it more. Seriously though it's one of those perfect endings for me because it is satisfying from Gondo's side. Then there is the villain who we have hated the whole film, yet it is still heartbreaking to see him breakdown knowing he's about to be executed as he struggles to explain his motivation. It is major reason I love Yamazaki's performance so much

Calvin Law said...

You've essentially explained why I've bumped Yamazaki into my top 20 of all-time. He's an entirely despicable villain yet somewhat emphatic still.

Calvin Law said...

Also, did anyone else feel a bit bad for Denzel last night? I felt like he was trying his best to be a good sport, but you can tell Fences meant so much to him.

Charles H said...

Calvin: Yeah, he was pretty beaten up by it.

Anonymous said...

Denzel was really polite to the fans that came, I also think if anybody saw in the background, Viggo Mortensen giving a hug to one of the fans was pretty endearing as well.

Calvin Law said...

Viggo and Henry (his son) were goals.

Blade Runner's art direction is one of the most influential in the last 40 years, and there is a reason for it. It is truly incredible and unique in its neon-noir (no typo there) style. As is usually important it is incredible lived in work, but there is a richness to this in establishing even a history in the world. It grants a certain urban rot, but also still has a definite urban beauty as well. It establishes a future world that is definitely new, yet grounded all the same. Furthermore I love the interior work in how varied it is. It shows functional areas like the freezer, building from past with Sebastian's workshop, but still grandeur where it fits such in the extravagant office of Tyrell.

To Kill a Mockingbird's art direction is effectively low key. In that much of it is realizing its period which it does well, but there's more. There's a possible nostalgia in so much of it, but with these touches of darkness such as Robinson's jail cell or Boo Radley's house. Has just the right small touches of style for the story, but it mostly very good in being a straight forward representation.

Anonymous:

1. Inoue and the Interpreter - Silence
2. Sarah, Ruby and Gigi - The Neon Demon
3. The Stranger - The Wailing
4. Marvin the Dog - Paterson
5. Darcy - Green Room

Luke:

The Duellists is an interesting example of a film that was in a way reactionary to, and obviously influenced by Barry Lyndon. In a rare case though this film is the stronger film, and thinking about it a bit more it actually contains my favorite single shot out of the two films after all, the shot of the defeated Feraud looking upon the horizon. The Duellists seeks to replicate a similair style as Lyndon in terms of cinematography and art direction.

It doesn't feel like a ripoff though as it goes in its own direction by offering frankly more humanity to the visuals. After all The Duellists care more about the titular pair than Lyndon seems to care about its central character, and with that there is far more emotion even in the camerawork and art direction. There is much more of a kinetic energy in the movement representing the passion of the duels. Still there's more though as we get grandeur, but also intimacy of the period. We are granted the grit in their surroundings during their most painful duel early on, we are granted the bitterness of the cold in their strange truce caused by war. It's amazing work.

By the way The Duellists is great, I don't think I say that enough.

Calvin:

After re-watching the film I have to say it has to have one of the best uses of a dog in any film. I especially love the scene where Marvin evilly watches Paterson from the distance as Paterson resets the Mail Box that Marvin purposefully bent.

Calvin Law said...

Oh I certainly agree, about both Marvin and The Duellists.

Luke Higham said...

That would be the most probable time.

I would have joined in on the running commentary you had on the blog but I had work the next day so I cleverly went to bed at 8pm and woke up at 4am to watch them, fortunately I didnt hear about the controversy because the moment I woke up I went downstairs and got my breakfast, then sat down and watched the Oscars from the beginning without looking at social media at all.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Your five favourite moments from the broadcast. I hope O'Connell winning was one of them.

Lastly, could you add the leads from Andrei Rublev, Solaris (1972) and Stalker (1979) to your lists

RatedRStar said...

Luke:

1) The ending, haha that was great.
2) fan interaction
3) That opening from Justin Timberlake was great, loved that the crowd were into it, unlike when Kasabian performed at the Baftas and no one cared lol.
4) I do really like the UK segments with Alex Zane and Sanjeev Baskhar I think they have good chemistry
5) I laughed numerous times which is a good sign indeed.

I had the Stalker lead in already, Solaris there is a chance although I wonder who I would take out, I am not sure about Andrei Rublev simply because of how stacked 1966 is, what with Per Oscarsson and Eddie Axberg being locks, its like who do I take out from David Warner, Donald Pleasance and Max Von Sydow, Rock Hudson might sneak in as well.

Charles H said...

Luke: Mine are.

1. The ending (It's grown on me a lot)
2. Affleck for best actor
3. Fan interaction
4. Paxton mention/tribute
5. Music/live performances

Then again I do have Hackman for 1966 for supporting in Hawaii so I guess I could take Von Sydow out maybe.

1. Kevin O'Connell winning at last
2. La La Land Wins/Nope, It's Moonlight

4. In Memoriam
5. Kimmel as Host

I skipped the musical performances, I'm afraid.

I must admit, I don't think I've truly loved an In Memoriam segment from the Oscars since Yo Yo Ma in 2005. The BAFTAs tend to get it right every year.

Louis: Would you consider Bondarchuk's War And Peace to be 1966 or 1967, because it says on wikipedia, that it was released in four separate parts between 66-67 yet it's seen as one sole film.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

That's a tricky one but I feel I really should separate all the sections given the time between them. Something like Little Dorrit for example was just shown over consecutive days, this was several months for each. After all I separate The Human Condition which is viewed as singular film by some.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Thanks for Clarifying.
