Louis, would you place Lucas Hedges in lead or supporting for Manchester by the Sea? Because I thought he might be another case of category fraud when I saw the trailer, but I saw it yesterday and thought he leaned more towards supporting than I was expecting.

Assassins Creed is only on 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, such a shame to see Fassbender, Cotilard, Gleeson, Rampling, Irons and a usually good director Kurzel in a poorly reviewed film.

Ive seen Wong and Cheung of course being the HK slut that I am =D I reckon Wong and Cheung might get the same rating, Wong may edge it though because he is just so disgusting, you cannot take your eyes off him.

Hangs head in shame. Why the fuck did I get my hopes up for this.

RatedRStar said...

Louis: Its interesting that Anthony Wong was ill during Beast Cops because he doesnt look much healthier here in The Untold Story although that works to his advantage lol, even though he was only 33 years old lol. There was a pretty amusing interview with Wong when he promoted Beast Cops basically it was

Interviewer: "What was it like working with Sam Lee"

Wong: "Haha he is a funny guy, he always stoned =)

Michael McCarthy said...

I have to say, Wong is probably the HK actor who's work I'm most interested in seeing. He surprised the hell out if me when I finally saw Beast Cops, he's dangerously close to being my win over Gleeson for that year.

Anonymous said...

RatedRStar: I'm not surprised that Assassins' Creed got negative reviews. Movie adaptations of video games just don't work, not even cartoon (I'm looking at you Darkstalkers) or anime adaptations (with some exceptions).

RatedRStar said...

Michael McCarthy: Anthony Wong is a very interesting man in general I mean like he is a punk rock singer in his spare time lol, I think Anthony Wong can and has given bad performances in films but most of the time he is always good to great =D.

Calvin Law said...

Wong is fine in general but I much prefer the likes of a Lau Ching-Wan in general. He is fantastic in The Mission and Beast Cops though.

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: Of course I love Lau Ching Wan I was desperate to get him on this blog at any cost lol, I would say Wong is one of HKs best, certainly on the upper tier of good Hong Kong actors, there arent many of them really when you look at all the Hong Kong Actors lol.

RatedRStar said...

I always like to think whenever I request or vote for a Hong Kong performance that I tend to be very cautious and careful to make sure that it is definitely a good performance.

RatedRStar said...

Then I realise that I requested Daniel Wu =) lol we all make mistakes.

Louis: I think Mortal Kombat is actually ok as a movie, it is fairly faithful to the first game with the exact same characters appearing which is about as good as one can get =D and the Mortal Kombat theme is still amazing to listen 2 lol, the actors do try as well I feel especially Lambert =D.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

2. Day-Lewis
3. Bradford
4. Cheung
5. Wong
Louis: Can you please watch Baazigar, and if anyone from this lineup is below a 3.5 (which I know is very unlikely, but still), and if you feel Shahrukh Khan's performance is worth a 4 or more, can you review his work instead?

Michael McCarthy said...

Hmmmmm nothing from The Aviator in DiCaprio's Top 10 huh? Interesting...

*cough cough* downgrade *cough*

Matt Mustin said...

Michael: I mean, there was nothing from Shame in Fassbender's top 10 and he still gives that performance a 5.

Luke Higham said...

Matt: I think his favourite scene from that performance was the dinner he had with Nicole Beharie's character.

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Michael: If you saw Rules Don't Apply, your complaints about DiCaprio in The Aviator would vanish entirely.

Luke Higham said...

Matt: I also think that these lists, are more about the acting and the directing going hand in hand with each other and Louis wasn't a fan of McQueen's direction in Shame.

Matt Mustin said...

Luke: Okay, I don't know what point you're trying to make but my point was that DiCaprio's not necessarily gonna get downgraded just because he didn't make the top 10.

Michael McCarthy said...

Robert: I doubt it. Rules Don't Apply seems like a completely different type of film from The Aviator, and Beatty seems to be going for an entirely different type of performance. No matter how bad he is, I can't imagine it affecting my feelings towards DiCaprio's work one way or the other.

Michael McCarthy said...

Matt: I get that, I'm just trying to make it happen regardless.

Luke Higham said...

Matt: What I really meant was that the performance and the direction work in perfect tandem to create a very effective scene.

Matt Mustin said...

Luke: And I agree. I don't really understand what happened here...

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Michael: You would think, but watching RDA I was taken aback at how Beatty seemed to flip flop back and fourth between how he wanted to interpret Hughes in terms of tone. As a result, I ended up appreciating what DiCaprio was going for more I hindsight.

Matt Mustin said...

Oh hey, David Thewlis is joining the cast of Fargo, so that's amazing.

Deiner said...

Louis: this is off topic but do you think you can watch Ruby in Paradise as well? I would love to read your thoughts on Ashley Judd's performance, one of my favorites from that year.

2-Day-Lewis

Foxx is terrible in 'Ray'... How could he win an Oscar?

Anonymous said...

Louis, what's your rating and thoughts on he actor who plays Ray as young? I think the kid is better then Foxx.

RatedRStar said...

Varun: Good campaigning and playing a real person probably did it, plus he wasn't against a particularly competitive lineup, only Leo had an outside chance of winning.

Álex Marqués said...

I don't think Foxx was that bad, especially when he portrays the musical performances.

RatedRStar said...

Whats worse is that the gang on this blog seem to be the only ones that do dislike Foxx in Ray, public opinion is overwhelmingly positive on Foxx in Ray which, I just feel that Foxx takes the too easy option of playing Ray with some painful impressions.

Anonymous said...

He comes off as a parody of Ray. Something that could be shown on SNL.

Charles H said...

Jamie Foxx in Ray is the same as his Jamie Foxx Show work.

Charles H said...

Overall a cringey, joke of a performance,

Anonymous said...

At least Regina King is very good in 'Ray'. Best part of the film.

Louis, your rating and thoughts on Regina King in 'Ray'.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Varun: I've seen Dil Chahta Hai a very long time ago. All I do remember is that Aamir Khan was very good in it. I need a rewatch, to be honest.

Calvin Law said...

Foxx is fine in Ray, nothing amazing but I personally think it's one of his best performances. Cheadle should have won though, most certainly.

Bryan L. said...

Foxx stood out like a sore thumb in Ray. Kind of like Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight, which is even worse in Foxx's case since he's the lead of the movie.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

I saw Hotel Rwanda a few days ago, and I was amazed by Cheadle's work. He's easily a 5 for me, and he's my #2 of 2004 behind Jim Carrey's phenomenal performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Louis Morgan said...

Deiner:

Sure.

Varun:

I'd agree King was good though her character almost seems comically like an afterthought, not to mention she has to attempt to give any reality to the creation of "hit the road jack" scene which is a pretty atrocious scene. I'll give her credit she keeps her head up best she can though. I wish that relationship had been developed more since King certainly tries.

Anonymous:

I've seen the episode but not in a very long time. I can't really remember it.

Tahmeed:

I'll try.

Matt:

Michael Caine:

1. Watching the porno - Get Carter
2. Danny's Exit - The Man Who Would Be King
3. After the Abortion - Alfie
4. The final kill - Get Carter
5. The Epilogue - The Man Who Would Be King
6. Jasper says goodbye - Children of Men
7. "A Thankful Heart" - Muppets Christmas Carol
8. Dying in a clown mask - Sleuth
9. Carter meets Brumby - Get Carter
10. Mortwell's final scene - Mona Lisa

Morgan Freeman:

1. The Box - Seven
2. Which eye? - Street Smart
3. Rehabilitated - The Shawshank Redemption
4. Spoil that kid - Seven
5. Fast Black at a party - Street Smart
6. Ned Can't Shoot - Unforgiven
7. Mozart Narration - The Shawshank Redemption
8. Sloth - Seven
9. "Just Looking" - Driving Miss Daisy
10. Kicking out the kids - Lean on Me

Calvin Law said...

Tahmeed: Cheadle is amazing and he'd be my win in almost any other year that decade. Unfortunately it was also the year of Bruno Ganz and Tom Cruise.

Bryan L. said...

Louis: Speaking of Collateral, your cast and director for a 1990s and 2010s Collateral?

Louis Morgan said...

94dk1:

90's directed by John McTiernan:

Max: Steve Buscemi
Vincent: Kurt Russell
Annie: Virginia Madsen
Ray:John Turturro
Daniel: Isaac Hayes
Felix: Viggo Mortensen

2010's directed by Kim Ji-Woon:

Max: Chiwetel Ejiofor
Vincent: Byung-hun Lee
Annie: Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Ray: Edgar Ramirez
Daniel: Wendell Pierce
Felix: Gael Garcia Bernal

Bryan L. said...

Thanks! Some pretty unique choices for the 90s version. McTiernan would have done a great job as well, considering Die Hard and whatnot. The 2010s version also would've been something else.

Anonymous said...

Louis: If It's a Wonderful Life had been remade in the 50's, who would you have chosen for the part of George Bailey?

Calvin Law said...

Saw Hacksaw Ridge. Let's just say I thought it was a combination of Mr Smith Goes to Washington and Paths of Glory, with Garfield going full on Jimmy Stewart in the early scenes and Jim Caviezel in the latter ones.

In other words, I loved it. Extended thoughts soon to come.

Garfield - 5
Weaving - 4.5
Palmer - 3.5
Bracey - 4.5
Vaughn - 3.5
Worthington - 4
Griffiths - 3
Everyone else - collective 3 to 3.5

Anonymous said...

Louis, your top 10 Marlon Brando acting moments?

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

I honestly cannot envision anyone else in the role of George Bailey besides Stewart. It is such quintessential Stewart in everyway imaginable, and there's a reason it is in my top five leading actor performances of all time. Only Stewart could pull it off.

Calvin:

Glad to hear you really took to it.

Varun:

1. "Could've been a contender" - On the Waterfront
2. The rape - A Streetcar Named Desire
3. "Honorable Men" - Julius Caesar
4. Confronting Friendly - On the Waterfront
5. Learning about Sonny - The Godfather
6. "Stella" - A Streetcar Named Desire
7. An errand boy - Apocalypse Now
8. Confessing to Edie - On the Waterfront
9. The opening - The Godfather
10. Finding his brother - On the Waterfront

Calvin Law said...

That's a fantastic choice of scenes for Brando. And yeah, I'd say HR is right up there in my top 10 of the decade already. Speaking of which who would you have picked in Vaughn's role? Because while I understand some of your reservations I thought he was perfectly cast (and I thought he looked awful in the trailers).

Calvin Law said...

Also, for that 2010s version of Collateral, should it be Choi Min-Sik cameoing in the Jason Statham equivalent?

My 2010s Leon the Professional directed by Kim Ji-Woon
Leon: Lee Byung-Hun
Matilda: Angourie Rice
Stansfield: Warren Oates

Calvin Law said...

*Walton Goggins

Robert MacFarlane said...

I actually had a conversation with someone yesterday about how I wanted Lee Byung-hun to play Roy Mustang if they ever make an Englsih language Fullmetal Alchemist movie.

Louis Morgan said...

Calvin:

Well for Vaughn, again I did like him, but maybe Bobby Cannavale who I feel could still keep that comedic energy yet bring a bit more intensity.

And yes Min-sik in the cameo role would be perfect.
