The only reason I predict Redgrave to be ranked first is because I have faith in Calvin's judgment of his performance. :)

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

As for other Bollywood/Bangladeshi performances that can be reviewed in the future, I guess:
Shahrukh Khan in Baazigar for 1993 Lead
Soumitra Chatterjee in Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) for 1959 Lead
Amjad Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in Sholay (1975 lead and supporting respectively)
Darsheel Safary in Taare Zameen Par (Like Stars on Earth)-A terrific child performance that is an accurate portrayal of dyslexia and struggle.
Amitabh Bachchan in Deewar for 1975 lead-It's his most famous "angry young man" role, so it's worth a look.

Robert and Michael: Didn't have an alarm go off thank goodness, but I had the EXACT same issue as you Robert; woman behind me kept laughing at some of the most inappropriate moments (particular the chair scene).

Should also note that we had a Q+A session with Jenkins and Naomie Harris afterwards which was very informative too.

Not sure if anyone here is a fan of Honest Trailers but their newest video sums up Suicide Squad very well.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Honest Trailers can be a bit obnoxious at times, but when they're right, they're pretty damn right.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Louis: I see you've upped Gosling in Drive above Dujardin in The Artist :) I'm quite pleased about that as well, although I love both performances dearly.
Do you feel tempted to give the win for 1953 to Montgomery Clift's work in From Here to Eternity? That performance is one of my top 10 favorites, although Holden was also pretty damn brilliant.

Álex Marqués said...

94dfk1: I saw it, it's great.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Suicide Squad, are Twenty One Pilots actually a rock band, because they seem to get classed as one as kerrang magazine, the Grammys and all the other awards shows seem to put them as but I just dont see where the rock comes from?

RatedRStar said...

Robert: I am not too big a fan of honest trailers, I think they are good on the odd occasion, there are so many worst YouTubers/Groups that cover films though so its cool lol =D.

I have pretty mixed feelings towards Twenty One Pilots, I need to listen to more of their songs because they just dont quite click for me although I dont think they are bad, maybe its the completely different genres of each song which means ill likely like the ones catered to my taste.

Bryan L. said...

Robert: My theory is that since all the other Top 40 artists are rap artists (Drake, Kanye West) or singers (Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Katy Perry, etc.) it makes Twenty One Pilots stick out more, since they're the closest thing to rock at the moment amongst the Top 40 artists.

Calvin Law said...

Tahmeed: Clift is brilliant and everything but I personally think Holden's work in that film is arguably the most dynamic, charismatic leading performance I've ever seen; simple but brilliant.

With regards to Moonlight, having given some time to ruminate I'd say Ali, Rhodes and Sanders were my favourites, though Harris and Holland are growing in my mind too.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, am I the only here that had a feeling that Leto was going to suck as The Joker?

Giuseppe Fadda said...

Has anyone else seen Certain Women? Lily Gladstone probably gives my favorite performance of 2016 so far.

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Anonymous: Even before the reports of his on set behavior, I figured he was going to go too far. Then again, I've never liked him. I don't even like him in DBC

Giuseppe Fadda said...

@Robert: Didn't you like him in Requiem for a Dream? I remember him being impressive in that one.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I've come to the realization that I hate Requiem for a Dream about a month ago. For years I tried to convince myself I liked it, but I've reached the stage of my life where I stopped caring what other people think. The performances aren't my "problem" with it, but I don't think any of them are special.

RatedRStar said...

I do like Jared Leto in 30 Seconds To Mars, I think he pretty much is only thing keeping that band a float similar to what Hayley Williams does with Paramore their basically a one main person and then a bunch of blank robots around them lol.

I imagine Louis will probably see Requiem for a Dream even if Leto doesnt appear, its one of those films that lots of people have seen, even a lot of non movie buffs just like regular members of the public which surprises me quite a lot.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What's your favourite Ben Foster performance. 3:10 To Yuma or Lone Survivor. And I'm 100% sure that he's a 5 for Hell Or High Water.

RatedRStar said...

Tahmeed: To be fair Clift did win that year originally so, I imagine that was a close choice for Louis. I imagine the fact Holden has more to do, and Clift has already won as well for a performance that he originally gave to Jackie Gleeson so, its tricky how the mind can change on occasion.

I mentioned this to Louis before, even though he got a 4.5 and Day Lewis was put to a 5, I reckon Viggo Mortensen was still the one from the original rankings changes that he felt most hurt to change simply because, I know Louis would love to give Viggo Mortensen a proper win.

If Viggo Mortensen gets nominated in 2016. I actually think... he might finish higher than Affleck, I think anyway.

RatedRStar said...

94dfk1: Very good point on Twenty One Pilots, say if this was 2005 or 1979, they wouldnt be classed rock, but because 2016s mainstream acts are less rock than they were back then, it automatically makes TOP a lot more heavier and rockish sounding so I guess in 2016 they would be classed as rock.

I am looking forward to the Best Actor nominations more than any other this year, simply because could we possibly get the greatest best actor lineup, having looked at the contenders, who is there that can get nominated that will get a bad rating or a 3.5 and less?

Luke Higham said...

JackiBoyz: Beatty, yet he's even more of a longshot now than he was a few weeks ago.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Your rating for Domhnall Gleeson in True Grit.

Álex Marqués said...

Louis: Why wouldn't you consider Pepper lead instead of supporting in Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada?

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

I will try to watch those.

Tahmeed:

In regards to 53 I started with Holden went to Clift then went back to Holden again. I'm pretty comfortable with Holden from here on out.

Anonymous:

I had my concerns in regards to Leto, but I always try to keep an open mind before seeing a performance.

Luke:

3:10 to Yuma.

3

Alex:

I would need re-watch to be sure, but I felt, even though he had scenes from his perspective, he was there to support Tommy Lee Jones's character's story. After all I believe there were also scenes from January Jones's, Melissa Leo's, Julio Cedillo's and Dwight Yoakam's characters' perspectives. I will admit he's on the border though and I could change his placement.

RIP Peter Vaughan

Louis: Your top 10 Transformers voices and episodes.

Calvin Law said...

Anyone else who's seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople, because Louis has given his thoughts on it: do you reckon Sam Neill and Ben Foster can be comfortably argued as Supporting because of their relative lack of perspective even though their screen time could be argued as that of leads? Because right now my supporting lineup is becoming incredibly congested with the Moonlight boys and a re-watch of Our Kind of Traitor.

Speaking of which my top 5 is now Neill, Foster, Ali, Lewis and Shannon but I absolutely hate having to leave off Rhodes, Skarsgard, Sanders and Taylor-Johnson, among many others.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I keep switching around who my Supporting Actor win is for the moment. Torn between Skarsgård, Taylor-Johnson, Ali, Holland, and Jerome.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Question for everyone: Which actor do you think would have been an ideal post-Reeve Superman? They can be from any period. My choice is Almost Famous-era Billy Crudup.

Matt Mustin said...

I think Barry Pepper's lead in Three Burials because I feel like, at it's core, it's really the story of his character's redemption.

Calvin Law said...

This is gonna be really lazy but...Ben Affleck.

Also, Kyle MacLachlan.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

My choice for supporting is probably Ali. Although if I considered Ben Foster to be supporting for Hell or High Water, he'd be my win quite easily.
Louis: Would you consider Foster as a a lead for that film? Watching the film again, I felt he was even more of a lead than Jeff Bridges was. I'd put all three of them as leads.

Bryan L. said...

Ben Foster would be perfect in a Coen brothers film.

Louis Morgan said...

Tahmeed:

He's on the border of course, but I do find him supporting by looking at Gil Birmingham. Those two are the equivalents. I felt the film was about both the cops and the robbers with Bridges leading the cops, Pine leading the robbers. Birmingham and Foster being the secondary characters on the opposing sides who technically support the main story.

Louis: Which of these performances are you likely to upgrade to a 5? If not, what would you say holds them back?
Lew Ayres- All Quiet on the Western Front
Russell Crowe- A Beautiful Mind
Sean Bean-Fellowship of the Ring
Sean Astin-Return of the King
Charlie Chaplin-The Great Dictator
I apologize if I sound pressing, I'm just curious.

Luke Higham said...

Tahmeed: Crowe's the only one out of those five, that has no chance of being upgraded. He's far more likely to be upgraded for Master And Commander.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I still maintain Crowe should be downgraded for A Beautiful Mind.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Louis: Oh, and I also intended to ask about Morgan Freeman's work in The Shawshank Redemption.
Luke: That's sad to hear, I actually think that's his second best performance after his remarkable work in LA Confidential.
Robert: I get that you don't like the movie; it also declines for me upon every rewatch. However, Crowe's work actually strengthens for me, because I kinda feel that he skillfully elevates the not-so-strong material he has to work with.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Louis: *The possibility for Morgan Freeman getting upgraded for Shawshank.

Calvin Law said...

I kinda hope Sam L Jackson will be upgraded for Pulp Fiction.

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Tahmeed: I think Crowe is just as bad as the movie itself. Telegraphed, constipated, and going against all of his strengths as an actor.

Álex Marqués said...

Calvin: I hope he is upgraded.

Louis: What are your thoughts on Willem Dafoe as an actor?

Just watched Awaara, i did not expect Kapoor to be so average. I don't think Louis will like him so much and i regret that I picket him as a suggestion. Hopefully Kapoor's performance won't dissuade Louis from reviewing another Hind Film performance.

Awaara wasn't even that good of a movie. From now on I will only suggest performances that I have seen.

Luke Higham said...

Varun: If Louis doesn't feel like reviewing Kapoor, I'm certain that he'll come up with a viable replacement.

Anonymous said...

I hope so, I just don't want him to get a negative view on Hindi Film performances based on Awaara.

There are som performances in Hindi Films and i just hope that he give indian actors another chance. I just hate how many people in the west view Hindi Cinema as "typical entertainment". There are some great hindi movie and performances and i just wan't them to get their fair due.

Anonymous said...

Don't understand why "Time" considered Kappor's performance as one of the 10 best performances of all time. Maybe Louis will like it, but I doubt it.

RatedRStar said...

I am gonna change my predictions based on that fact as well as a small suspicion that this could be another Choi Min Sik of everyone thinking he will get a 5 and then underwhelm us all

I actually think Oskar Werner will finish last simply because I felt it was him learning the ropes, he was still good enough though, and certainly better than dull Basehart from the same film, who managed to do a 180 and be good in Fourteen Hours in a role that any actor really could have been good in since its such an easy role to do.

Then again the former Duran Duran member hasnt given a bad performance yet and I think that trend will continue so.

Oskar Werner has been requested pretty much everytime he has had a chance but he will get snubbed for 1968 to end that run lol.

Possibly all except Crowe.

Anonymous:

Dafoe - (Dafoe I find to be just a slightly curious actor in that there are the occasional performances where he doesn't make much of an impact and is just sort of there. Most of the time though he offers a unique and engaging presence that is very much his own. There is something about him that makes him stand out and works well for his renegade roles such as in his two Oscar nominations and old Bobby Peru. I'd also say he's a bit underrated in terms of his comedic ability, which whenever he tasks with such roles he really shines in them.)

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Thameed: I've gotten the opportunity to read the screenplay. It is fucking bonkers.
