Speaking of Serenity, RIP Ron Glass

Ohh of topic I am so giddy, Final Fantasy 15 is getting great reviews =D yes the game of my dreamsss =D =D the game where I practically am the main character hehe.

Anyway back to films, did anybody see the original Red Eye trailer, it was setup as a romantic comedy lol.

RIP Ron Glass

I would like Louis to see Serenity as well, it got surprisingly great reviews for a film of its type, it rarely gets talked about, as well as Ejiofor I have heard good things about Alan Tudyk as well.

Wolf Of Wall Street has to be on the top ten best films when high list lol.

Anonymous: And Trainspotting.

Louis: as you said Schoaenerts would be a good choice to Pitt's character in Allied, opposite Cotillard, have you already seen Rust and Bone, in which they actually play a couple?

How much of a chance do you guys think Ryan Gosling has of getting a Best Actor nomination for La La Land? He has a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical in the bag IMO, but I get the feeling all of the acting love from the Academy will be received by Emma Stone, just like Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams.

However, he's been long overdue for a nomination, since his last (and first one, to boot) was for Half-Nelson a decade ago. Interesting to see if Baby Goose will hear his name called out in the wee hours of Oscar Announcement Day.

Gus B. said...

I actually am thinking Mortensen will get the globe for actor in comedy/musical.

Álex Marqués said...

I think he has a good chance of getting nominated since he's long overdue and his movie is doing extremely well.

RatedRStar said...

I dont think both Gosling and Mortensen will get nominated for the Oscar, only one will. For me whoever wins the Globe out of these 2 will probably be the person to get in I think, unless Beatty pulls off an upset.

Matt Mustin said...

Beatty has less than no chance.

Saw Nocturnal Animals. Loved Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Liked Shannon. Hated everything else about it.

Robert: Jake?

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Anonymous: Honestly not too good. Came off as miscast in both roles.

Calvin Law said...

I feel like I probably agree with you Robert on all fronts except Jake, to be honest.

Everyone: just read that the original cut of The Town was 4 hours long. I really like the film as it is but I'm really intrigued as to what sort of footage was cut out.

Anonymous said...

I would agree 2 on everything except Jake, I thought he was great and I reckon you might be on your own with that statement on this occasion lol

Anonymous said...

This is a different Anonymous asking this question, I havent seen Nocturnal Animals yet but what is the difference between Jake Gyllenhaals 2 roles in terms of character, is one sad and nice but the other is vengeful and desperate or something?

Giuseppe Fadda said...

I'm probably the only one here who liked Nocturnal Animals but even I have to admit it does have some flaws. Personally I think Jack was terrific and Adams was very strong too. Taylor-Johnson' work is actually growing on me quite a lot. I'd probably downgrade Linney to a 3.5 though, even if I do like her work.

The 'real' character Jake plays is actually rather problematic in that the film almost wants you to sympathise with him, but really he's just a bit of a jerk. The 'fictional' character is actually a fairly simple, straightforward sort of character, kinda reminded me of Dustin Hoffman in Straw Dogs, but Jake plays it really, really well in my opinion, vengeful and desperate yes, but also has some nice chemistry with Shannon, and great anti-chemistry with Taylor-Johnson.

I reckon out of all of the second choice winners that you made Louis in the original Oscar lineups, I reckon Viggo Mortensen was the one that you felt most sad about taking his win away (with Cagney being the easiest to give), so I reckon you would personally love to see Mortensen get a second nomination.

Luke:

Huffman - (I found the film kind of terrible, a film with far too much artificial quirk for its own good. Huffman's performance though I found to be quite good. She absolutely does transform, and there is never any point when you do not see the character. She absolutely inhabits the role. She goes further than that carefully never straying into caricature, never being defined only be the setup the character. She is equally good in portraying the certain degree of awkwardness and desperation of her character who is trying to find the right place. She always brings the emotional connection to the journey, and never allows the sometimes overly broad style of certain scenes, throw her work off)

Theron - (The film itself is always very very close to becoming a glorified TV movie, but Theron does her best to keep it from it. I like that Theron never makes her role that of this virtuous saint or martyr to be pitied. She realizes the emotional distress certainly, as well as the inner strength. She never allows it to become just specifying as she finds the power in the character's actions, while still showing the very real personal difficulties particularly in the way she does not hold back in presenting the more negative qualities of the character in her relationship with her son.)

Adams - (I have to admit I loved every second of her performance. This is the strongest rendition of essentially her type, at least what was her type for awhile. As she brings that usual Adams sweetness which feels especially sweet and honest here. Adams though is heartbreaking all the same in always revealing the need for some sort of acceptance within the sunshine. She never overplays either side creating such an affecting dichotomy by so earnestly revealing the pain and joy so effortlessly intertwined.)

No but that does not mean I will avoid it. Supporting is getting a bit thicker, but I'd say it's still thin especially compared to last year.

Also I will watch Serenity.

Anonymous:

I don't really partake, so it would be hard for me to answer that.

Gus:

Haven't seen it. I suggested him based on what I've heard about that film, and how he has excelled with internalized roles in the past, particularly in the case of Bullhead.

94dk1:

I think Gosling's chances are better than many are giving him credit for. The weakness of the category, in terms of who Oscar will consider, will only help Gosling. Oddly enough the year could have more legitimate contenders than some previous "stronger" years, as in there are more actors with a chance to get in than usual making Gosling's attachment to the odds on favorite for best picture all the more important. That means he'll probably be on more ballots even if he isn't listed number one. Not to mention he could easily be double nominated at the globes and then win it for La La Land, which will only boost his chances. I personally would have him at a firm #3 in terms of Oscar predictions.

Robert MacFarlane said...

@Calvin: That was the big issue I had with the film: Gyllenhaal's "real" character was a complete putz. The entire film's basis is that he wrote a pulpy revenge porn novel to get back at his ex wife. The ending when they basically pin it all on Adams is when the film completely earned my scorn. Before that I found it garish in the "real" portion and schlocky in the "fake" portion, but not totally without merit.

While I understand the love for Shannon's work, he was at "very good" for me. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, on the other hand, was a real surprise. Partially because I didn't realize it was him until halfway through the film. But yeah, he's never been more charismatic, creepy, or entertaining as he was here. Even though I disliked the Cormac McCarthy-lite "edge" of that section of the film, he totally had interest the entire time.

As for Gyllenhaal's performance(s), I confess I continue to have trouble viewing him in roles where he isn't playing weird or creepy (Brokeback and Prisoners are exceptions). I felt both of his performances here felt awkward and at times overwrought. I could always see the wheels turning.

(Also, I saw Loving after it and thought it was pretty good. Perhaps a bit too restrained for its own good, but I liked both leads a lot.)

To hop on the earlier discussion of Ron Glass' unfortunate passing and Serenity, I've seen it and it's quite enjoyable. Tudyk is good, but Summer Glau is definitely the standout. It's watchable if you haven't seen Firefly, though that certainly increases the enjoyment

Louis: Can I get your thoughts on Paradise Now as a whole?

Giuseppe Fadda said...

What did you all think of the Satellite nominations? I definitely did not expect Adams to be nominated for Nocturnal Animals over Arrival.

Robert MacFarlane said...

The Satellite nominations are almost never indicative of the Oscars, so I never pay attention. That said, concerning Adams: Ew.

Louis Morgan said...

Michael:

I thought it was an effective film, particularly in terms of the few bits of humor within the film that humanized the situation. I liked the opening scenes a lot where we just saw the men going about their days, then the ending was rather powerful as the two each come to a decision. The middle though I felt was just a bit disjointed at times, and almost seemed to be waiting around for the ending. Luckily the strength of that ending made up for it.

Giuseppe:

Technically there are some good choice in there, though I don't think I've really heard anyone prefer that Adams's performance. The Satellites though I don't hold in very high regard in their rush to be first, and their coverall nomination method.

I am more stunned by Eddie Murphy getting nominated lol.

Louis Morgan said...

The only voice for Apocalypse to the point that I think they tried to alter Oscar Isaac's voice at times to get that strange thing Colicos did. It is indeed strange, but I love it. It is absolutely a unique voice for such a villain, in all its weirdness. I don't think I've seen the episodes with Blendick's rendition.

Louis thoughts on the NBR wins?

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

In terms of indicators I don't think it told us anything new just suggested a few potential confirmations, such as that Bridges is definitely in the running for supporting actor. I expect Moonlight and Manchester to trade off when it comes to the critics groups, so this is just the beginning of that.

In terms quality I can't say much other than I'm glad Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, and Hell or High Water made it into the top ten and that Adams won for what just about everyone says is her best performance from this year.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: How close is Adams to a 5 for Arrival.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Well I'll tell you it is definitely one performance I need to see how it plays on re-watch, and I mean that in a purely positive way.

Robert MacFarlane said...

She's the reason the twist works in Arrival. She plays it in an ambiguous enough way that you're not sure if she's grieving or confused.
