Louis, also you top ten war movies and thrillers

I am pretty confident that Brasseur and Bohm will finish last simply because they are director films but in terms of film quality Eyes Without A Face and Peeping Tom are quite scary.

1. Attenborough
2. Guinness
3. Delon
4. Brasseur
5. Bohm

I see Keaton or Affleck winning Best Actor. I don't see Denzel winning number 3, this would be Garfield's first nomination, and they might make Gosling wait like they did with Leo.

I really hope they release a poster for Silence soon, at the very least.

Varun:

DiCaprio by a razor's margin.

Covered War in Kravchenko review for 85. If you don't mind could you specify a type of thriller?

94dk1:

Like I said there's not a clear favorite as all my predicted nominees have something against them.

Keaton (Kroc seems like he will be too "unlikable" as a character to win)
Affleck (Seems like the type of film critics will love more than the academy)
Gosling (The strongest praise went to Stone so far, they'd have to go all in for La La Land, which I could actually see happening though)
Garfield (First nomination without a critical sweep, which I don't see happening, is unlikely to win)
Washington (Has already won twice, and based on his previous efforts as a director I don't think the film will get many nominations beyond the two lead actors)

Hell or High Water 1960's directed by John Sturges:

Toby Howard: Steve McQueen
Tanner Howard: Paul Newman
Marcus Hamilton: James Cagney
Alberto Parker: Thomas Gomez

alt.: Dallas Howard

Supporting Actor
- Neeson
- Hedges

Do you think the talk about Cotillard being the reason Pitt and Jolie are breaking up may hurt her future chances (including this year) of getting nominated again? I mean, based on how Hollywood can be emotional with their most beloved stars, etc.

Thoughts on the Passengers trailer anyone?

Robert MacFarlane said...

I doubt it. He might get more stigma.

Michael McCarthy said...

I really liked the first minute or so of the Passengers trailer, where it looked like it could be a quirky sci-fi romantic comedy. Then it became a trailer for a generic survival thriller and I kind of lost interest.

Bryan L. said...

Michael: I suppose it looks intriguing, but I really hope that it doesn't suffer the same fate as Suicide Squad, with its tonal inconsistencies. Hopefully the transition between the different tones in Passengers happen slowly and gradually instead of randomly as they did in Suicide Squad.

Giuseppe Fadda said...

I agree completely with Michael. The first half of the trailer looked so good and then the second half was just kind of standard. I hope the trailer does not reflect the quality of the movie.

Louis Morgan said...

Varun:

1. Blue Velvet
2. L.A. Confidential
3. Drive
4. Chinatown
5. Fargo
6. Badlands
7. Memento
8. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
9. Seven
10. The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three

Anonymous:

I would have liked to have heard it in general, maybe in The Dark Knight Returns animated film where the joker's voice was rather weak, but I'm glad Hamill played the part in the animated series.

94dk1:

I have a feeling the trailer may be misleading, and the film will focus more closely on the relationship.

Watching American Crime Story, it's interesting how engaging I find it in spite of its flaws (particularly the performances of Gooding Jr. and Travolta). K. Brown is really really good.

Calvin Law said...

Alex: I actually thought Travolta was perfectly fine, but Gooding Jr was a huge misfire.

Calvin Law said...

Louis: could I recommend you watch Citizen X (1995) at some point in the future, it's a far better example of telling the story Child 44 tried to tell and also has some fabulous performances, by Jeffrey Demunn in particular.

RIP Curtis Hanson.
Louis: Since you've seen the animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, what are your thoughts on Peter Weller's voice work as Batman?

Giuseppe Fadda said...

R.I.P. Curtis Hanson

I completely agree that despite its flaws The People v. O.J. Simpson it's a highly entertaining series. And while I hate Travolta and Gooding Jr. in it, I think Vance, Paulson and Brown are absolutely excellent.

Louis, I've seen you put Claire Trevor in leading for Stagecoach. Can I ask you why you think she's leading rather than supporting? I'm not really sure about her category placement myself.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

There is innate problem with the adaptation, as well as The Batman Year one adaptation, where they did not bother to you know adapt. Taking the comic word for word scene for scene, actually doesn't work, because certain things might work on the page but don't with a movie.

Anyway I do like Weller's performance as brought an innate hardness to Batman that worked well for Miller's style, and I felt he managed to even deliver the lines fairly well which was quite the challenge given their often kind of absurd nature. There still are some iffy moments because of that, the best approach probably was Michael Ironside's take on that Batman in the Animated Series, but Weller still gave a good performance.

Luke:

Will do.

2

Calvin:

You certainly can. I really need to catch up with some of those well regarded TV movies.

Giuseppe:

I would not begrudge anyone for placing her supporting. I feel the film centers around Dallas and the Ringo Kid's respective journey, however you could just as easily say it's an ensemble piece.

RIP Curtis Hanson.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: For supporting, I would suggest Peter Sellers in Never Let Go and Martin Stephens in Village Of The Damned.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Well, the shot of the kids' shadows on the black top is one of mine.

Louis Morgan said...

Fair enough.

Calvin Law said...

I'd have to give the win to Drive pretty easily too. Tree of Life would be my win for Score though.

I saw Calvin's alternate castings for LA Confidential and was inspired to do the same for Cloud Atlas. Here's Danny Boyle's for now.

Directed by Danny Boyle (Twyker's segments) and Alex Garland (the Wachowski segments)
Written by Simon Beaufoy, Boyle and Garland
Ewan McGregor instead of Hanks
James McAvoy instead of Whishaw
Rosario Dawson instead of Halle Berry
Cillian Murphy instead of Sturgess
Brendan Gleeson instead of Broadbent
Robert Carlyle instead of Weaving
Tilda Swinton instead of Sarandon
Jonny Lee Miller instead of Grant

Michael Patison said...

I don't remember if I've already asked for them before, but can I have your ratings and thoughts on Kay Francis and Miriam Hopkins in Trouble in Paradise.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Ironside - (The only way I can really hear the character. Ironside work is pitch perfect as it exudes such menace. He importantly captures the "god" side of the character emphasizing the way he views himself as a omnipotent to the point that there is a certain ease about his delivery. He makes Darkseid someone who believes themselves to be right since he simply is. It's excellent work in a very underrated series)

Marcus:

Carson - 3.5(The film does not put too much emphasis so to speak on his performance, keeping Stanton often as the one to carry the relationship. Carson is good where he is needed though at just giving a naturalistic performance as this kid. There's nothing special about him, and nor should there be. Carson is just a believable kid, and does well with that particularly in the "chase" scene.)

Michael:

I'd look around 32 lead/Supporting.

Tahmeed:

Noted.
