Louis: You know that I would love to get your opinion on Batman Vs. Superman, but please don't waste your money on it, it's mostly terrible and the only bright spots are Affleck, Gadot and Irons (Though the latter two are severely underused).

The Writing and Directing was Meh and Doomsday's CGI was god-awful.

SOD OFF SNYDER!!!!.

Ratings
Affleck - 3/3.5
Gadot - 3
Cavill - 2.5
Irons - 2.5/3
Adams - 2

Louis: I agree with your thoughts on both Korman and Wilder, except I like Korman more, I think. He's my #4 for the year. It might not have worked, but I've thought a few times about how much I would've loved to have seen Tim Conway in Slim Pickens role, just because of the chemistry he and Korman had on Carol Burnett (one of my favorite shows ever).

Louis: Please review Brosnan for the next Wiseau round.

RatedRStar said...

Omg Travolta will win this destroyed his career for good, Cage is the most funny though, Jon Voight is just shit and stupid, I have never seen Redmayne but he will finish last I reckon because he is most just not laughably bad just annoying and crap.

Louis I thought you werent coming back for a week lol you did this fairly quickly lol haha.

1. Travolta
2. Cage (The Wicker Man)
3. Voight
4. Cage (Deadfall)
5. Redmayne

RatedRStar said...

Omg I will have to watch Redmayne he is the only one I have not seeen, it will be painful I think.

RatedRStar said...

Nicolas Cage always gets mocked by many people but I will just say... Leaving Las Vegas, I am also glad you chose him over Sean Penn because I felt Sean Penn misfired in some moments in Dead Man Walking.

Anonymous said...

Still have to see Hick.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Hick is unwatchable. Hell, Redmayne will probably get another 0 for it.

RatedRStar said...

Robert: Why is Redmayne bad in Hick, I have never heard of it or seen it, what is so bad about it?

Anonymous said...

Robert: Is it that bad?

Robert MacFarlane said...

Read the Wikipedia description. Go on, I'll wait.

Wow, Hick has a score of 5% on Rotten Tomatoes.

RatedRStar said...

Wiki didnt really help me, all I got was that it was completely different from the novel, and that it had 5% rating on RT, this isnt a razzie performance this is more of a Richard Dix rating.

RatedRStar said...

Redmayne has to finish last, I just dont see him being laughable aside from Jupiter Ascending, he is lucky that he has 2 Oscar nominations, he better improve as an actor or I will be very angry in the future.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I'm not one for being pessimistic, but he won't.

RatedRStar said...

I just watched the trailer to Hick, ye ok Redmayne can do a redneck accent, big fucking deal, I reckon he will get 1 or 2 stars, he wont get a Wiseau.

Anonymous said...

For such a likable guy in interviews, Redmayne should use that likability in his performances.

RatedRStar said...

Eddie Redmayne is a likable and charming fellow, he just needs to wake up, and get better.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I'm giving it a pass.

I've boosted Affleck's rating to a 4 for Batman Vs. Superman. I thought he did a very good job portraying each facet of his character and would love to see a solo film.

Anonymous said...

RatedRStar: He got lucky in my opinion. Did Theory of Everything and got an Oscar for it. I seriously hope he gets better, but I don't think he will. He even won a Tony, would see the performance he won that Tony for.

Anonymous said...

*have loved to see the performance he won that Tony for.

Anonymous said...

I think I'll watch Batman V Superman, but I'm sure I will be very disappointed with it.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Be prepared for pain and misery.

Anonymous said...

Luke: Thanks for the advice. I'll take The Dark Knight Returns over it for sure.

Anonymous said...

*Thanks for the warning.

Anonymous said...

Even if hasn't come out yet, Suicide Squad will probably be disappointing as well as Batman V Superman. And the Joker's design still doesn't resonate with me. The tattoos to me are just trying too hard to look edgy as possible.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I honestly think Affleck was severely hampered by how HORRIBLY written Batman was.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: Would you say it's the worst superhero film in the past five years.

Robert MacFarlane said...

No, ASM2 is worse.

Anonymous said...

Robert: Due to Foxx's performance, I presume?

Robert MacFarlane said...

No, Foxx wasn't even my 4th least favorite of that cast. No, ASM2 is just much lazier and haphazard. BvS is more competent but morally bankrupt.

Louis Morgan said...

RatedRStar:

Well doing lineup posts is not particularly time consuming.

Luke:

I have sort of seen Mamma Mia, his singing is indeed into Wiseau territory but I did not feel the rest of his performance was.

Seen them all. Travolta was atrocious and entertaining, though the entertainment value wanes on rewatch. Cage is hilariously bad in Deadfall but in the Wicker Man I actually think he knows what he's doing in being so uprariously ridiculous. Voight is also very entertaining in his oddities, especially some of his facial expressions, accent.

Redmayne however is just genuinely terrible in Hick, and not even entertainingly so, and I generally like him.

Louis: You said that Powell's biggest weakness as an actor was a role that demanded him to be more dour. What role would you say that was demanding him to be more dour? Manhattan Melodrama?

Alex Marqués said...

1. Travolta
2. Cage (Deadfall)
3. Cage (Wicker Man)
4. Voight
5. Redmayne

Changed my prediction after seeing a video of the highlights of Cage in Deadfall

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Seen anything new lately.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Well what I more of meant was when a role purposefully seemed to deny him the ability to tap into his sardonic skill, like Manhatten Melodrama.

Luke:

I'm afraid I took your advice and have stayed away from BvS for at least the time being, and have not seen anything otherwise.

Anonymous said...

Louis: Honestly, while I like Powell's sardonic style, I found his performance in Manhattan Melodrama more interesting than Gable's performance because he portrayed a much more serious character. While I love Powell in the majority of his comedic roles, I think that Manhattan Melodrama gave him a chance to display much more dramatic acting chops.

Anonymous said...

Louis: Are there performances that could go from a 4 to a 4,5?

mcofra7 said...

What film would be a good introduction to Robert Altman? Seems like a good director to check out.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Probably yes.

mcofra7:

I think I'd recommend starting with the player.

Anonymous said...

Louis: Could Heston's performance in Hamlet go to a 4,5? That performance really sticks with everytime I see the film.

Louis Morgan said...

Yes it could.

Anonymous said...

Louis: You already gave me your version of The Godfather in the 30's with a cast and director. What actors would you have chosen for Luca Brasi, Barzini, Moe Greene and Tattaglia?

Calvin Law said...

Anonymous: I get the feeling Louis is rather busy and thus all these questions might be increasing his workload. If it's not to presumptuous of me I could give some of my propositions and future retroactive castings you might want

Luca Brasi: John Carradine
Moe Greene: Ward Bond
Tattaglia: Adolf Menjou

Calvin Law said...

*Adolphe

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Whenever you do see BVS, I hope Affleck gets at least a 3.5 from you.

Luke Higham said...

Did anyone see the Affleck/Cavill press interview.

RatedRStar said...

Luke: That...sad one lol? yes.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Yes, I saw that press interview, and by God did I laugh.

Calvin Law said...

I saw BvS.

Hm. Score was great and I kind of enjoyed it, though for nearly all the wrong reasons. I won't deny that it's pretty poor in some respects and also incredibly mean-spirited. Also next time I get into a fight with someone I'll make sure our mother's have the same name or something because you know, it'll help me get out of a sticky situation. The main flaw was probably the script, although Snyder's direction did reach certain career lows.

Cavill: 2 (I was an apologist for Man of Steel and Cavill gave my favourite portrayal of Superman there, but he really just seemed incredibly phoned in and uninvested here, although given that horrible writing surrounding him I'm not surprised why. He showed very little of that screen presence he showed last time round.)
Affleck: 3 (I stand corrected...kinda. He's really good at just being Batman although the way the film depicts him is very problematic. I would say Bale is still my favourite since I prefer his Bruce Wayne and Affleck's Batman is just a bit too warped for my tastes. Really I need to ruminate a bit more about him)
Gadot: 3 (not bad at all)
Adams: 1.5 (bad but also badly written role)
Lane: 2.5 (utterly wasted)
Irons: 2.5 (had some good moments with Affleck but also rather wasted)
Hunter: 2.5 (what a thankless role, she was good in her last scene though)
Shannon: 5 (amazingly invested and subtle)

AND FINALLY

Eisenberg who I don't think I should even give a rating to, since it's so clear that he thoroughly disliked doing the film, and thought so little of it, that he just decided to go ultra meta and do his best to give as Billy Zane-y a villanous performance as possible, but unlike Zane winking at the audience along the way. Not really Wiseau worthy as it is genuinely quite a bad performance that would be with little entertainment value without an awareness of what Eisenberg comes across as an actor and person.

Calvin Law said...

Oh yeah and nearly forgot, Laurence Fishburne is good and agree completely with Robert it was like he was from a better film (whereas Affleck and Gadot were very clearly in a bad film but doing their best to stay afloat), I was thinking wouldn't Perry White have been a good addition to the Spotlight team? Also poor Jimmy Olesen.

Final point: Batman was surprisingly stupid in this, and it's a shame since Affleck gave a surprisingly intelligent performance in many respects, even with the senseless writing going against him. I would even go so far as to say he'd have been better suited to the Nolan films (though conversely I doubt even Bale could've salvaged this disaster).

Anonymous said...

Calvin: Still have to see BvS. It would have been a lot better if Nolan had directed and wrote the film, wouldn't you agree?

Anonymous said...

*Do you think it would have been a lot better if Nolan had directed and wrote the film?

Calvin Law said...

It would've been more interesting to have seen Nolan's take on The Dark Knight Returns. Not necessarily canonical with his Dark Knight universe, but with say Keaton back as the Bat, and possibly Kyle Machalan as an older Superman, and Jeff Goldblum as the Joker, etc.

But yeah a BvS with Nolan could've been better though it'd never have happened as I doubt he'd want to commit to another franchise so soon, and Bale would've most likely not wanted to do it.

Calvin Law said...

*Maclachlan

Anonymous said...

Calvin: I would have loved to see Keaton as a older Batman.

So I just watched Hick, and my God, Redmayne doesn't deserve a Wiseau. He was really terrible.

GM said...

1. Cage (TWM)
2. Travolta
3. Cage (Deadfall)
4. Voight
5. Redmayne

Robert MacFarlane said...

Redmayne in Hick is probably going to get a special rating of 5 Balems, the equivalent of a 0.

Anonymous said...

Robert: I won't mind if he gets a 0. Redmayne is a likable guy, but he needs to really improve as an actor, but I don't think he will. With this film, my hopes of him improving have severely decreased.

RatedRStar said...

5 Middle Fingers I would give him.

1. Nicolas Cage (Deadfall)

3. Nicolas Cage (The Wicker Man)
4. Jon Voight
5. Eddie Redmayne

RatedRStar said...

Luke: Did you give your winning request? I just wondered if you had or were still thinking.

moviefilm said...

What are you all saying about Redmayne? I haven't seen Hick myself, but it was done in 2011 and since then he had proved himself as a great actor in The Theory of Everything AND The Danish Girl (putting apart your personal opinions, the general opinion is important). Redmayne needs to evolve, which he already IS doing and even a good actor has got his missteps (Voight, Pacino and De Niro in recent films).

Robert MacFarlane said...

You have no idea how bad he is in Hick. No idea.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: My recent track record when it comes to predictions has been pretty poor, so I'm probably gonna save it for an unrecognised 2016 performance, though don't be surprised if I choose Fassbender again.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: If I win another prediction, by the time 2011 Lead comes around, then I'll request Woody Harrelson in Rampart. Aside from that, I've no ideas for future requests, because your lists have given me some reassurance.

Anonymous said...

Just a suggestion Louis, and I know you don't do female performances nor are you doing them anytime soon.. but you should do a special review for Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest".. that is well.. one kind of a Wiseau-worthy performance.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous: He won't do special reviews for actresses.

Anonymous said...

Like I said, just a suggestion.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Another suggestion; Forget Redmayne in Hick and just do Christopher Walken in Peter Pan Live. It may not be a movie, but GODDAMN he was something.

RatedRStar said...

I know Eddie Redmayne is talented, I just think he wastes it so often, he is still very young and I know he will get a third Oscar nomination at some point so he will eventually come good, just not right now I dont think, and he was awful in the early 2010s, like in My Week With Marilyn where he was so dull.

Luke: Harrelson would be a good choice although I did have him in my lineup anyway since it looks like there will b 10 for 2011, should be a fine choice.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I think Louis planned on reviewing Harrelson for the alternates, back in 2012, but reviewed Wieckiewicz for In Darkness instead. He didn't finish it as well and from what he saw, he was quite remarkable.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: But with 3 slots remaining, I probably will request him, just in case.

RatedRStar said...

Luke: Go for it =D

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I was planning on an April Fool joke, but fuck it.

Louis: My request is Woody Harrelson in Rampart.

Anonymous said...

Luke: Is Rampart good?

Calvin Law said...

RatedRStar: Are Redgrave and Howard in your 1951 list for Best Actor?

Anonymous said...

Calvin: They are.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I thought it was Solid, yet found Harrelson rather compelling.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Your thoughts on the film and cast. I'm pleased you gave Affleck a 3.5. :)

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: They are in my list =D.

RatedRStar said...

Wow ladies and gentlemen we have 8 requests for 2011, I think I might know who the final 2 will be, could it be... A man who wants to make a women perfect by changing her face and a gay man who will commit to a relationship while his partner cannot =D.

moviefilm said...

Louis: It might be a terrible film with a dreadful cast, when Affleck is the MVP.
Robert: I might watch Hick, just to see it myself, but the trailer looks awful and for now it's more than enough for me.

Calvin Law said...

2011 is a really interesting year. I would love to see reviews for Levitt (50/50 and my runner-up to Oldman), Giamatti (Win Win), Omar Sy (Intouchables), Damon (The Adjustment Bureau), but the two performances RatedRStar mentioned sound intriguing and probably more complex than the ones I've listed.

Also Patton Oswalt in Young Adult is a must for supporting.

1. Oldman
2. Gordon-Levitt
3. Dujardin
4. Shannon
5. Gosling
6. Damon
7. Gleeson
8. Sy
9. Cluzet
10. Giamatti

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: One of them's definitely Banderas in The Skin I Live In.

Calvin Law said...

Also forgot Gyllenhal he would be my 6 actually.

And supporting,

1. Strong
2. Pitt
3. Brooks
4. Hardy
5. Hurt
6. Von Sydow
7. Cumberbatch
8. Mortensen
9. Hollander
10. Branagh

Calvin Law said...

Oswalt somewhere around 4 perhaps.

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: I have seen 50/50, the reason I didn't include Gordon Levitt is because, I think he is a fine actor but even though I have seen Brick, I am still waiting for Levitt to wow me, I think he is a fine actor but he isnt really like, the future or a great complex actor, I do like him though and I think he does try but I think he needs to practice a bit more and then he will become a great actor in future.

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: Oswalt was in my lineup for supporting so I think he will b ok.

Anonymous said...

Finally watched Gunfight at the OK Corral. Douglas and Lancaster sure made one hell of a team.

Robert MacFarlane said...

The movie killed itself for me within in the first fifteen minutes when it's revealed Batman brands criminals like cattle so they get killed in prison. That is the most sadistic, cowardly thing I could ever imagine any incarnation of Batman to do.

Louis Morgan said...

Robert:

Honestly I think if Snyder had his way completely Superman and Batman would have both gone on a killing spree throughout the movie.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I have the capacity to tolerate Snyder, but this one killed what little patience I had left with him. I was prepared for the worst, I was not prepared for something so despicable in theme. This film actually illustrates all of the ways the Nolan movies use morality by failing spectacularly in that area.

Anonymous said...

Louis: I've noticed that you don't have Ian MacDonald in High Noon in your rankings for 1952 supporting. I think he was unmemorable as a villain. Palance would have made a better choice.

Matt Mustin said...

Louis, what would you say are some of your favourite Seinfeld episodes?

Louis Morgan said...

Robert:

Hopefully he'll be fired from JLA since if this is how he handled two main characters, imagine how he'll handle five or more.

Anonymous:

I once wrote that I'd only rank performances I remembered. I always find him forgettable despite the build up to his appearance, and yes Palance would have been much better.

Matt:

Favorites per season

Season 1:

"The Stock Tip" (They're pretty rough though)

Season 2:

"The Baby Shower"

Season 3:

"The Boyfriend" though Philip Baker Hall makes a strong case for "The Library"

Season 4:

"The Old Man"

Season 5:

"The Opposite"

Season 6:

"The Race"

Season 7:

"The Soup Nazi"

Season 8:

"The Fatigues"

Season 9:

"The Strike"

Louis: What are your top 10 performances where the actors were perfectly cast?

Michael Patison said...

In terms of 2011, I'd put Fassbender in supporting for Jane Eyre rather easily. I'd also really like to see Aksel Hennie reviewed for Headhunters

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I've decided to cancel my request for Reed in The Devils. I'm 100% confident, that he'll be reviewed, regardless if he's requested or not.

I'll save the request for a 2016 performance.

Michael McCarthy said...

Have we not learned our lesson about requesting performances for years that aren't over yet? In both 2014 and 2015 there were outstanding performances that lost out on reviews because someone requested less deserving performances before the year was finished.

Luke Higham said...

Michael McCarthy: I won't make the request until the year's over. I'll ask Louis to hold on giving thoughts to a performance, I may want to request by then.

Louis Morgan said...

5. Kathy Bates - Misery
6. Gloria Swanson - Sunset Boulevard
7. Robert Blake - In Cold Blood
8. John Hurt - 10 Rillington Place

Dear Morgan!
I love reading your opinion on this blog! So different from all others. I just wanna ask you about the year 1993, you'd mentioned so many good performances. However, I couldn't see Leslie Cheung in Farewell my Concubine here! From my POV, this was a masterpiece and the best performance of him. Why you didn;t put him in the list?? What is your opinion about that role?
