Louis: While Peck was the perfect choice for Atticus Finch, what other actors do you think could have done a great job? Also, what do you think might have happened to Lee Remick and Elizabeth Hartman's careers if they hadn't died so young?

Last night I saw Spectre with 3 other friends (sort of) and maybe I shouldnt go to see films with friends from now on because its amazing how different their taste in movies, it was embarrassing, the fact that they all thought Spectre was bad because it didn't have that much action in it, I wish I had never have gone with them =(.

RatedRStar said...

Its only the people on this blog that share any of the same film tastes.

Anonymous said...

What are your thoughts on Nicole Kidman in To Die For? I'm so glad she's in your line-up and that she's a 4.5, I think she's fantastic in that movie.

Anonymous said...

RatedRStar: You just can't expect people to have the same tastes as you.

RatedRStar said...

Their taste I find to be so poor, I mean, criticizing Spectre just because there wasnt any action is just blahh.

Louis, thoughts and ratings on...

Hugh Grant/Sense And Sensibility
Alan Rickman/Sense And Sensibility
Danny Devito/Get Shorty
Joaquin Phoenix/To Die For
Tomas Von Brömsen/All Things Fair
Marika Lagerkrantz/All Things Fair
Matt Dilon/To Die For

Has everyone already shared their thoughts on Specter?

RatedRStar: I understand, many of my friends say the same thing about Drive when i tell them that i love the movie. The movie may not be violent all the time (The moments of violence are still brutal and effective) it is the more emotional violence im drawn to.

Scorecese himself claims The Age Of Innocence to be his most violent movie, which is a clear reference to how the emotional factor is stronger then the pshysical... I don't thing i have ever written such a long post before on this blog lol (:

RatedRStar: Your ratings and thoughts on Craig and Waltz in Spectre.

Calvin Law said...

I just got back from Spectre. LOVED IT. By far my all-time favourite James Bond film. It was so classically Bond-ian with its little nods and stylistic homages, and yet a entirely different, adrenaline rush of a beast on so many levels. Loved the humour, action, dramatic beats and all. It's my new 2015 Best Picture.

Craig: 4.5/5 (first time I've actually liked his Bond, in fact I quite loved his portrayal here)
Seydoux: 4
Waltz: 4.5
Fiennes: 4
Whishaw: 4
Harris: 3
Christensen: 3.5/4
Sam Smith: 5 (haters gonna hate I loved the theme tune)

Luke Higham said...

Calvin:
Would you recommend Waltz for a review.

Calvin Law said...

Luke: Hm. Maybe not. Firstly though I think he's great, he's not quite Bardem's Silva's level...yet. i have a feeling a sequel will give him even more time to shine, and maybe review him too.

Waltz and Craig I'll save my thoughts on initially in case I do a Head-to-Head.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I think it's an entertaining performance, though one I've come to expect from him. I also felt that he was a bit underused.

My Craig Era Villains Ranking
1. Silva (Skyfall)
2. Le Chiffre (Casino Royale)
3. Oberhauser (Spectre)
4. Greene (Quantum Of Solace)

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: Do you think Craig has one more film in him.

Anonymous said...

Luke: I think he could do another Bond film.

Calvin Law said...

Oh definitely, he seems to be hitting his stride now. Although the ending of Spectre does seem to allow for his departure already with a fitting end.

Even if he does leave though I'd like them to retain Whishaw, Fiennes, Kinnear and Harris.

Louis: Who would be your cast and director for:
There Will Be Blood and Glengarry Glen Ross (30's and 40's)

RatedRStar said...

Luke: I feel like doing the whole cast because I think they all do well.

Craig (4.5) Craig I feel takes a risk here as this is by far his most emotional portrayal, and I think it pays off wonderfully, particularly in certain scenes like when he is tortured, or even in his heavy dramatic scene when Waltz plays the video to him and he violently snaps, this Bond is almost like a completely damaged Bond and I felt Craig did those things great while still being typical Craig Bond with good humour and presence.

Seydoux (4) The idiots that I saw this with in the Cinema thought she was terrible and not sexy enough (I am never seeing a film with them AGAIN and I mean that) and the big problem they had was with the love scene after the fight with Hinx. I felt Seydoux was decent early on in showing this women with a past who doesn't trust Bond, but the love scene is well done because both she and Craig had got to this moment perfectly in their conversations and just their glances at each other, the emotional moments work very well due to their chemistry.

Waltz (4.5) I feel he is underutilized a bit but to be fair Silva was hardly in his film for a long time, I feel Waltz does the charming slightly creepiness great as he always does. Certain scenes help this like his intro, the torture scene and his final conversation behind the glass, I particularly like how calm and dignified he still is after getting the scar, his final scene has a very sequel like ending as if to say, this isnt over yet which I quite liked.

Whishaw and Fiennes (4) Filled with laughs but also giving good dramatic weight to their roles, I particularly loved Fiennes response to C with the words " Cocky little shit arent you"

Christensen (3) One scene, but quite well done actually showing the desperation and even pleads for Bond to help him.

Kinnear and Harris (3) They don't get much to do but they fit their roles quite well.

Scott (3) The twist is far too easy to guess what with Scott playing Moriarty in Sherlock but he is still appropriately smug and arrogant.

Bautista (2.5) Classic non talking villain, he actually departs the film earlier than I though, I am not sure if he is dead though so we may see him again, did quite like his brutal intro scene.

Calvin Law said...

I will give Scott a 3.5 actually, I really liked him.

Louis: I now see why you really dislike Mary Pickford in Coquette. In this one scene, she overacts so much, she dashes any hope of being even remotely believable. That disgustingly sweet voice is too much for me.

Louis: If by some chance Fassbender doesn't get nominated for Steve Jobs, I will request him, though please review him simultaneously with his performance in Macbeth and don't include him in the prediction contest, just so everyone's happy.

For the prediction contest: Macbeth

If he does get nominated, I'll probably request Geza Rohrig in Son Of Saul for the 2015 Lead Bonus Round.

Luke: would you say Craig's performance in Spectre is your favourite of the series? Also Best Actor/Actress/Supporting Actor has changed for me again.

Actor:
1. McKellen
2. Damon

4. Hardy
5. Fassbender
6. Depp
7. Craig (although I will say a re-watch could bump him up, up, up)
8. Courtenay
9. Foster
10. Edgerton

1. Mulligan (Far From the Madding Crowd)
2. Vikander (Ex Machina)
3. Mulligan (Suffragette)
4. Vikander (Testament of Youth)
5. Seydoux (strongly verging on a 4.5 now)

1. Del Toro
2. Schonaerts
3. Waltz
4. Sheen
5. Brolin
6. Brolin
7. Sarsgaard
8. Edgerton
9. Fiennes

Luke:

4.5

Hurt - 3.5(He's not given to much to do but Hurt still brings the needed menace and cold authority needed for his character)

Strathairn - 4(A good performance as he makes the casual cruelty and despicable of his character seem painfully natural. That first scene with Bates is particularly good where he suggests perhaps what charmed her to him originally than bluntly revealing the real man he is. It's strong work, and a re-watch could easily bump him higher)

Freeman - 3.5(Another that's been since 95 since I saw it. I recall him being a hoot in the role, playing it up as he should for Power Rangers, and easily very easily being the highlight of the film)

Bean - 4(One of the better Bond villains, although actually Goldeneye has three memorable Bond villains all in the same film. Bean though carries himself with the suave menace you want from a Bond villain, but he also brings a certain emotional conviction in the scene where he describes his motivation to Bond.)

Postlethwaite - 3.5(A good bit of quick character work from Postlethwaite as he creates an effective enigma with his bizarre accent that he uses which only adds to his mysterious character. He's especially good in bringing such palatable menace when he threatens all of the men one by one.)

Rickman - 4(A fine performance and an interesting one for Rickman who often plays cold characters. I like him here as he cleverly subverts that in the way he has a distant about him, though just through the meek nature of the character, while hiding an excessive abundance of warmth beneath the surface. A re-watch could move him up as well)

Grant - 3(Standard Grant, but a fine example of it)

Irons - 4(Die Hard villains should always be a Gruber evidently. His accent is perhaps as questionable as Rickman's was, but that's part of the fun. Rickman got a little more to work with, as Irons's character is always literally on the move. Irons though gives an enjoyable and appropriately villainous turn that you'd expect from Scar and Claus von Bulow.)

Stiller - 4(Another that I have not seen since 95. Dodgeball was really just reprise of this, which is fine since Stiller is pretty hilarious by bringing such absurd perhaps psychotic intensity to the role of a fitness guru. He actually is kinda scary even in the role, but oh so funny by really bringing so much conviction in this completely ridiculous role.)

Ogden Stiers - 3(I'm going to say his voice was entertaining enough, anyways I always really liked his brief role in Hunchback particularly in the opening number of that film)

Cumming - 4(GoldenEye really is bursting with good villains and Cumming is terrific in the role. He brings just the right manic energy and weaselly quality to the character being kind of endearing while still being appropriately despicable. I've always loved his delivery of "I am Invincible" especially in that final scene)

Thewlis - 3(Thewlis is perhaps harmed most by the film's transitions. He's good in basically being Ralph Richardson in The Citadel as he brings a quiet heart in the character that makes his innate goodness rather poignant)

I think Jimmy Stewart could have also done very well in the role. Unfortunately with actresses they rarely have much of a career later on and that very easily could have been the case for Remick and Hartman. I believe Hartman actually had retired from acting before her death, although that might have been due to her depression to begin with.

Anonymous:

Kidman - (She finds just the right tone for the material in that she never seems mean spirited though never hides the nature of her character either. She's rather wonderfully in bringing such perkiness to the role while never losing that glint in her eyes that suggest her evil intentions. Kidman brings just enough style that makes her role humorous while still kinda chilling. She certainly delivers in bringing the seductive qualities of the part, while also being just so enjoyably vapid in the role as well)

John Smith:

Phoenix - 4(Bordering on a 4.5. Phoenix plays the role very while by being so believable at being a complete fool. What I like so much about Phoenix's performance is he never makes his character sinister in the least rather just playing him as a teenager completely caught up with this woman that of course he'll do anything she desires)

Brömsen - 3.5(I thought something was missing in terms of his character's relationship with Stig, but I thought he did the apparently unknowing husband then the desperate men both quite well the film just never really allowed him to connect the two)

Lagerkrantz - 3.5( Like Brömsen I also feel there is something missing by the film in when she becomes basically broken I don't feel that it's really built too well enough. Like him as well though I think she plays the sides quite well. She makes the affair believable by revealing the vulnerability behind the proper teacher quite well, and then later the viciousness from that same emotional core)

Dillon - 3.5(He's good in the role by just being really a likable and warm guy in all his scenes, that his death does actually carry weight to it, and helps to avoid that quality found in a more problematic black comedy like Heathers for example)
