Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2007: Results

10. Morgan Freeman in Gone Baby Gone - Freeman has good moments, but gives a little too many indications about his character's duplicitous nature early on.

Best Scene: His confrontation with Patrick,.
9. John Travolta in Hairspray - Travolta nicely gives a surprisingly earnest and sometimes moving portrayal of his character.

Best Scene: Edna revealing her insecurities.
8. Ed Harris in Gone Baby Gone - Harris nicely brings his usual acerbic style that works quite well for his character.

Best Scene: Remy's confession.
7. Tommy Lee Jones in No Country For Old Men - Jones gives a moving, yet also somehow funny portrayal of a man's confusion and exasperation in face of a violent world.

Best Scene: Bell visits Ellis.
6. Sam Rockwell in The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford - Rockwell gives a terrific example of a pure supporting performance, that adds so much to the film, despite only ever briefly being the focus of it.

Best Scene: The Assassination.
5. Albert Finney in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Finney gives a powerful portrayal of the rage and heartbreak that comes from a horrible loss.

Best Scene: The Last Scene.
4. Steve Zahn in Rescue Dawn - Zahn gives a haunting portrayal of a prisoner of war being worn away by his captors and nature.

Best Scene: After the failed signal.
3. Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz - Dalton gives a hilarious performance by creating the most obviously evil character who ever existed.

Best Scene: Skinner listens to Angel's theory.
2. John Carroll Lynch in Zodiac -  Lynch gives an outstanding performance, brilliantly realizing his unnerving enigma of a man all in one scene, well and a reaction shot. I have to admit that it was absurdly difficult just to rank my top and I'll admit I'm still not sure of my winner. I feel that I could switch out to any one of performances in the top five. This is an unbelievably great year for the category, it has to be to leave the likes of Bardem and Rockwell out of the top five.

Best Scene: His first scene. Although that reaction shot is also amazing.
1. Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma - Foster gives a wildly entertaining as well a rather chilling portrayal of a man who takes loyalty very seriously.

Best Scene: Finding the decoy wagon.

Wow, if Freeman had been rated correctly this would be the most fives ever in a supporting year :P

My top five recommendations are the same as Luke's but here are some other possibilities:

John Cusack-Say Anything
Matt Dillon-Drugstore Cowboy
Michael Douglas-The War of the Roses
Kevin Costner-Field of Dreams (Probably the only time I found him genuinely likable.)

I don't really have anyone else to mention, its the same with the rest of the years, all I have to say to Louis is when you get to 1939, remember that giant list I gave you, as for the other years, I kinda already know who is getting in, since most people have mentioned a lot of them.

I am just like excited about the bonus reviews, the moment Louis mentions how they work, I will get straight on with my spreadsheet, and finding performances for each year and marking them down as I did with the alternates.

RatedRStar: What I'm looking forward too most about the bonus rounds, is that Louis will get to see more great female performances, such as Imelda Staunton in Vera Drake and Marion Cotillard in Rust And Bone. Another good thing, is that almost every year will become stronger than they've been during the alternates. e.g. 2014 has 17 5s overall and who knows, it might go up to 20 and 2012 has 10 but should go up to 12 at least with Mikkelsen (The Hunt) and Cotillard.

Luke:

Skolimowski - 3.5(I rather like the support he offers in his couple of scenes, as he brings a certain endearing fire to the old man as he confronts the mobsters, managing to make his actions believable)

Simmons - 3.5(Once again a hoot)

Daniels - 3.5(I think he almost overdoes the supportive friends beats just a tad early on the film. Once he settles down though Daniels gives the right sort of exasperated wisdom of sorts that effectively shows that his knowledge comes from pain)

Jones - 3.5(Jones is usually a welcome presence and being kinda a natural character helps adds a nice bit of character to the film)

Barry - 3.5(Very one note but an enjoyably one note one note)

Church - 3.5(He actually gives a rather moving portrayal of the sandman's plight. The film just has a problem knowing what exactly to do with him. By the way he has to be one of the most perfect casting in terms of representing the comic character ever)

O'Toole - 4(Although maybe Louis Jouvet deserves a bit of posthumous nom as well. Easily my favorite part of the film as O'Toole does the cold pompousness of the character beautifully)

Simmons - 4(Simmons offers some fine work here managing to work his way through some of the questionable dialogue, managing to be rather funny well being rather heartwarming as well)

Whishaw - 4(Whishaw literally gets the least room to move around as Dylan, but I quite like his quietly rebellious side that represents the poet side of Dylan quite effectively)

Franklin - 4(I rather like his performance as he conveys the certain seeds of wisdom, but at the same time does a good job of suggesting the manner of the boy to always be a bit of a kid making make believe)

Russell - 4.5(He single handily gives the film any reason to exist. Russell is compelling any moment he's onscreen with his enjoyably sleazy turn as stunt man Mike. Whenever he's off the film suffers a whole lot, but he still stays as a memorable villain for an unmemorable film)

Brolin - 4.5(Brolin I find kinda manages to steal the film with his menacing portrayal of the corrupt cop. Brolin effectively creates the sort of man who just abuses his power, and has seemingly no reservations about it in the least. Brolin manages to make one element in the film that feels complete)

Mueller-Stahl - 4.5(A very good performance as he at first seems to be the character he fairly often plays that of the warm and wise old man. Mueller-Stahl pulls that away somewhat to reveal a man more like he played in Shine, but he's particularly chilling though when he reveals the man to be even darker than that)

Cera - 2.5(Never care too much for Cera I'll admit. This case be no different)

Ledger - 2.5(His performance here fell a bit flat for me and his story never came to life the way I felt the others did.)

Top Ten:

1. Zodiac
2. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Razor thin margin between the top two)
3. Hot Fuzz
4. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
5. No Country For Old Men
6. There Will Be Blood
7. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
8. Rescue Dawn
9. Eastern Promises
10. Gone Baby Gone

I actually thought Ledger was the best after Blanchett in I'm Not There, better than Bale, Gere and all the others who didn't really made any sort of impact. Ledger was very good in his role and probably a 4 for me.
