I've only seen Arkin who was very good. Anyway, I'd like to ask you: since you gave a 4 to Mildred Natwick in Barefoot in the Park, and you put her lower than Ross, did you upgrade the latter from a 3.5 to a 4?

I just named the nominees off the top of my head so yeah Jo Van Fleet would actually by my #3.

Wright - 3.5(One should look no further than Wright for the perfect actress to bring the right sort of warm motherly support. She does not get a great deal to do but nevertheless she's a lovely presence)

Also has anyone seen John Wick yet? Just saw it today and it is truly a cool and badass film, with Keanu Reeves' second best performance after A Scanner Darkly

I've actually thought about checking it out next week. I like Reeves more than most seem to, and Alfie Allen's in it, and as a Theon Greyjoy supporter I feel I must see it. How is he in it?

Allen is actually pretty good in it as he portrayed the annoying and inexperienced thug who gets in way over his head very well. But the real show-stealers are Lance Reddick and Ian McShane. Those two were pitch perfect casting.

Oh and David Patrick Kelly has an interesting cameo as well.

Louis what did you make of the great Sir Tom Courtenay in Night of the Generals

I really hope you like Far from The Madding Crowd, its up there for me with Ryans Daughter as one of the most underrated epics.

Scott Gingold:

Savalas - 3(One of my problems with the film, though it does try, the Dozen never come to life the way they should. Savalas probably stands out the most, since he's the villain of the piece. He is pretty good in his moments of sadistic intensity though. I wish the film had given him more to do though)

Robards - 3.5(Robards is rather enjoyable as the man who's basically always try to get a husband for his ex-wife. Robards manages to be both constantly driven yet humorously sorrowful)

Pleasence - 3.5(This could have been a great villainous performance as I like his hollow delivery and manner as the evil Blofeld more than any other version of the character. My only problem is that the film is in such a rush to get rid of him it seems he's barely seen before his moving chair takes him away)

Boyer - 3.5(Boyer actually is quite charming here and managed to bring some much needed life to Simon's dialogue which is always a little too obvious in its attempts to be either clever or cute)

Oates - 3.5(He used to be my favorite supporting player, but on re-watch I noticed how good Scott Wilson was in his very small part as the second guy accused of the murder. Anyway Oates is good though balancing a nice bit of humor with the part, but never making him simply a caricature. At the end of the film he's very good in portraying the disbelief and fear in Sam)

Martin - 3.5(Well that voice of his simply is perfect for the role. He creates his villain quite effecitvely as his performance naturally goes from making the warden seem cogenial to completely sinister in an instant)

Sanders - 3.5(Speaking of perfect voices Sanders was perfectly cast as he seemed to be part feline anyway. Sanders's purr is great for Shere Khan as he carries such a gentle menance at all times)

Harris - 3.5(His voice makes Baloo immensely likable the moment he appears as there is such a great warmth to him. I have to say the film probably would have had far more powerful ending if Baloo actually died at the end)

Morse - 4(He's basically one note of a charming deviousness, but what a great note that is. He's just so enjoyable to watch him parade his way up the corporate ladder, and I'm glad he does have a certain sinister quality to the way he plays our hero)

Courtenay - 4(As usual he's very good, and is actually quite close to being the third lead. Courtenay seems like he could handle a part like this in his sleep. Nevertheless he's once again so good at portraying internal anguish which only grows for his character as the film proceeds. This is not quite up there with Doctor Zhivago or King & Country, but still some solid work)
