This is kind of hard to predict. I know everyone seem to be crazy about Borgnine but I think he's quite one-note and limited... Gielgud was very good in Julius Caesar.
Predictions:
1. Preminger
2. Gielgud
3. Borgnine
4. Marvin
5. Robinson

What made you bump up Jean Simmons to a 4.5 for Hamlet? And also, can I have your thoughts on her in Angel Face? (I'm interested because you gave her a 2)

Louis: Can I have your thoughts on Simmons in Spartacus.

1. Gieguld
2. Preminger
3. Borgnine
4. Robinson
5. Marvin

Also, having been watching much of Nicolas Cage and Burt Lancaster recently, does anyone else agree with me in seeing similar styles of performances? In that they can be crazy, manic and interesting, or a bit boring

My winning request is for Ed Harris in Gone Baby Gone, you can review him together with Freeman in one post.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Since 07 Supporting is stacked, I think you should open a few more slots for it, since I think you'll cover 07 last out of the 2000s.

Kevin: At least Freeman's less of a waste now, than he was before.

What the 07 supporting lineup should be
Harris & Freeman in Gone Baby Gone
John Carroll Lynch in Zodiac
Sam Rockwell in The Assassination of Jesse James
Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma
Albert Finney in Before The Devil Knows Your Dead
Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz
Tommy Lee Jones in No Country For Old Men

I would add Robert Downey Jr to that lineup as well for Zodiac, you can review him alongside Lynch if you wish.

Wahlberg: 3
Phoenix: 5
Caan: 3.5

This is Where I Leave You

Bateman: 4.5
Fey: 4
Driver: 2.5
Stoll: 3.5
Fonda: 1.5
Olyphant: 2.5
Byrne: 3 (though the role technically calls for a lower score, but I'll be generous)
Shepard: 2
Britton: 3
Spencer: 3
Hahn: 2.5

Haven't seen much lately, outside of those two and Gone Girl, which I've already given my ratings on.

Was Jane Fonda so bad in This is where I leave you?

Robert MacFarlane said...

She was pretty annoying. There was a twist with her character near the end that lowered her score from a 2 to a 1.5.

RatedRStar said...

I honestly havnt seen any films recently lol, Gone Girl will definately be soon though.

Also, one of Sir John Gielguds teachers was.....Claude Rains...omg =D so cool.

Michael McCarthy said...

1. John Gielgud
2. Jay Robinson (the only fun part of a DULL film)
3. Otto Preminger (should've gotten more to do)
4. Ernest Borgnine (same as Preminger)
5. Lee Marvin (I'd rank him higher but I'm not sure Louis will)

Another two more charm based performances.

Page - 3.5(Obviously not nearly a good enough use of her considerable talents to be sure. Despite the role being absurdly average in many ways Page still shines in the role, which really is more co-lead than supporting)

Kelly - 2.5(Aside from Rear Window I've never really cared much for her performances this performance included)

Simmons's performance is that is one always on the border for me anyways.

Angel Face - (She did not want to do the film and it shows. She's an absurdly uninteresting and not very alluring femme fatale. It's just one extremely phoned in performance)

Luke:

Spartacus - (She does just some rather wonderful work here. I like how she gradually shows her character to almost break out from a certain shyness as her character breaks away from slavery. She also just has some rather sweet chemistry with Douglas, and I like her anti-chemistry with Olivier)

1. Ben Foster
2. Tom Hardy
3. Michael Fassbender
4. Cillian Murphy
5. Joaquin Phoenix
6. Michael Shannon
7. Christian Bale
8. Jake Gyllenhaal
9. Ryan Gosling
10. James McAvoy

Anonymous:

Arquette - 2.5(To be honest I just never bought her performance at any phase of it. There was always a certain awkwardness to her whole performance and never convinced me of her character let alone making her character compelling. I especially failed to believe the big breakdown scene, which came off like an Oscar grabbing scene anyway, and it felt completely forced. She frankly just did not seem a fit for Linklater's material unlike Hawke)
