Looking forward to a scathing review of Zane, with Louis at his sardonic best :D It's been awhile

Louis: Ratings & Thoughts on Gary Oldman in Air Force One & The Fifth Element, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights, Addy & Wilkinson in The Full Monty and Bernard Hill in Titanic.

Also what was your rating for Carlyle, since it wasn't added to your previous comments.

Luke:

Oldman - Air Force One - 3.5(An entertaining, if slightly absurd performance, that does his best to make things a bit memorable in an action film that does not always stand out otherwise)

The Fifth Element - (I think I might watch Fifth Element again as it's been a while, and what I remember is that Oldman was very weird in this one. I can't remember if that was in a wholly good way though)

Hoffman - 3.5(Hoffman pretty good in his scenes, before his one big scene, in setting up his character as an overly enthusiastic fan boy of Dirk. He's not my favorite from the ensemble but he certainly adds to it nicely)

Addy - 4.5(Out of the supporting guys I found his story the best. A big part of that is because of Addy's performance. He's got some particularly wonderful chemistry with Carlyle and they manage to be both funny and incredibly charming. Addy though also manages to be particularly moving in his very honest depiction of his character's struggle with his self-image)

Wilkinson - 4(Wilkinson is no slouch either and does a good job making his character stand apart from the rest. He does well to bring the right deadpan "seriousness" to his character that works perfectly along with the antics of the others. Like Addy and Carlyle he also does a particularly fine job of bringing a real dramatic weight while still remaining comedic in general)

You might as well ask me about Hill in Zane's review, since I'll be refreshed.

Carlyle is a 4.5.

mrripley:

Greenwood - 4(A solid portrayal of grief throughout the film. He's particularly good in showing the way the man changes through every scene we see him from the intensity of seeing the even occur, to the more somber and haunted quality Greenwood brings when he trying to put the event in the past)

Kevin:

Stallone - 3.5(Stallone first setting of overly relaxed in his performance style actually works quite well here in portraying the general malaise of his character who basically let's everyone else make decisions for him. Stallone is completely solid in portraying the way his character slowly wakes up and stands his ground well against a line up of Martin Scorsese's gangsters)

Ray Liotta - 4(The biggest surprise for me about the film was that Liotta ended up not being a bad guy after all, how rare. Anyway no one does coked out quite like Liotta which certainly helps. Liotta's is quite effective in making his character's moral journey rather poignant, and does kinda steal the film from Stallone in a way)

John Malkovich - 3.5(Malkovich Malkoviching it up big time. Which is fine because he's pretty entertaining and carries plenty of menace with his performance. It's not his best villain turn but its a pretty good one)

Steve Buscemi - 3(He's creepy enough in the role, but I do feel he and the film both make his character a bit too cutesy which seems pretty bizarre for a Hannibal type psychopath)

Ford - 3(A pretty standard leading action turn by Ford. He's awake which is all that is needed for him to be good, but you never really get the idea that he's the president. This might as well have been made a Jack Ryan film as that's how Ford played the role)

Boogie Nights:

Reilly - 3(He's completely fine here. To be honest he does not really get to do anything beside follow Wahlberg's character around)

Cheadle - 4(Cheadle is able to make his subplot resonate as he technically gives a pretty straight forward performance. By doing that though Cheadle makes his character stand out as he shows his character, a pornstar, just trying to make a decent life for himself despite so many things seeming to stand in his way)

Graham - 4(Her performance acts as a nice counterpoint to Moore's performance. Where Moore's performance is that of a emotion desperation hidden by an emotional warmth, Graham shows Rollergirl also to be filled with desperation but she hides it through a vapidness instead)

Jane - 3(Interesting to see the usually somewhat bland actor play such a flamboyant role. He does pretty well with it although I don't find his performance overly memorable)

Molina - 3.5(Molina can maybe go a little too over the top too often, but he's an extremely entertaining one scene wonder here allowing his one scene to be one of the most memorable scenes in the memorable film)

Anonymous:

Elliot - 4.5(I have to say I rather loved her performance. She gives such a genuinely lovely performance although always undercut with a tragedy as she always suggests the sickness. The whole end of the film might have faltered by Elliot absolutely makes you believe why Roache's character would have forgotten the plan and completely fallen in love with her)

Also, I actually think Elliot was the WORST part of Wings of the Dove. Don't get the praise at all.

What are your thoughts on Don Cheadle as an actor, Louis? You seem to like him a lot which is great, I personally think he is one of the misused actors in the business nowadays but he can be awesome.

I had an interesting idea that you of course can take or leave Louis, but what if you combined Zane's review with a review of Chris O'Donnell in Batman & Robin? I thought he was just as bad if not worse than Zane, and I imagine you could have a lot of fun reviewing him.

Matt Mustin said...

The difference there is that O'Donnell is boring and annoying, whereas Zane, from what I've seen, is just plain absurd.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Hence why I requested Zane. He is the interesting sort of bad.

Holden - 2.5(He was obviously too old for the part and his miscasting becomes a hurdle he can't overcome. The part needed someone like Marlon Brando to have the youthful exuberance and impulse which was sorely lacking from Holden's performance. His chemistry with Novak is quite lacking and he just was all wrong for the part)

Robertson - 2.5(This is not Robertson's fault as he hits the beats well enough, he just has a terrible part to play)

Novak - 2(She's horribly bland and its hard to see her character wanting more in life since Novak plays her in such vapid fashion)

Strasberg - 2.5(Strasberg is a little better because she's brings a little life to her role. The problem is the writing just seems quite off randomly creating emotional turmoil in the characters while never properly building to it)

Russell - 3.5(She probably would have won an Oscar if she had allowed herself to go supporting here. This is not a great performance though as again she is victim of the material as the freak out of her character seems so sudden and poorly led to. Russell for her part does her best to bring something to the melodrama just because she's such a charming presence.)

Anonymous:

Novak - 2(Novak was again bland once again in 55. She's nothing more than an object of affection here since Novak does nothing to make her character really come to life in anyway)

Parker - 4(I found her easily the best part of the film as I found her performance quite intriguing as she played such a manipulative and devious character in such a quiet and modest fashion. She makes her character far more remarkable than Novak's and I wish the film had spent more time with her)

Winters - 4(Winters does the victim quite well as you can really feel her character's despair and later growing insanity making her eventual demise quite chilling)

Gish - 5(As good as Mitchum as she is as good here as Mitchum is evil. Where Mitchum is such a fierce some Big Bad Wolf, Gish is such a wonderful fairy godmother. Like Mitchum she brings a certain style to her performance while still managing ground her character, in her case with an honest emotional poignancy. Together they help establish the perfect tone for the film that does so well to make Night of the Hunter such a unforgettable cinematic experience)
