Alternate Best Actor 1970: Results

5. Jean Louis Trintignant in The Conformist- Trintignant fails to find consistency in his performance, and simply gives an uninteresting portrayal of a character with potential.

Best Scene: Marcello watches the assassination.
4. Alejandro Jodorowsky in El Topo- Jodorowsky gives an effective performance as a cool headed gunfighter then a repentant monk, but he never stands out past his own direction.

Best Scene: El Topo creates a new exit out of the cave.
3. Peter Boyle in Joe- Boyle gives a good performance as working class loud mouth by showing the man behind the bluster, but the film's shortcomings keep him from giving a great performance.

Best Scene: Joe's introduction.
2. Albert Finney in Scrooge- Finney overplays a moment here and there, but his alternate take on Ebenezer Scrooge does manage to work for the most part.

Best Scene: The redemption medley.
1. Gian Maria Volontè in Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion- The only alternate that really brought much excitement for me is Volontè's work. Volontè gives an interesting and entertaining performance that cleverly manages to make sense of his character's seemingly random behavior.

Best Scene: The inspector openly confesses to his crime.

I was fine with the Bafta nominations, I think Best Supporting Actor is between Fassbender and Bruhl (the Baftas love European actors)Chiwetel will 100 percent win Best Actor, I am not surprised by Leto and Matthews snub, We British dont really nominated independent American dramas too often, Jared Leto is more well known over here for 30 Seconds To Mars than he is acting.

What is everybodys opinion on Jared Letos band 30 Seconds To Mars =)

RatedRStar: My Predictions
Best Film: 12 Years A Slave
Best Director: Alfonso Cauron
Best Actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor
Best Supporting Actor: Michael Fassbender
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actress: Lupita N'Yongo
Best British Film: Gravity

Could I just say I'm glad The Butler has lost so much momentum since its release. It was typical African American Sugercoated Schlock.

RatedRStar: I like 30 seconds to Mars well enough although I prefer Muse.

RatedRStar: will you go on the biggest rant of your life if Claude Rains comes second.

Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Heroes

Some others (I have not seen most of them):
Bernard Cribbins in The Railway Children

Anthony Perkins in Catch-22
Anthony Perkins in WUSA
Innokenty Smoktunovsky in Crime and Punishment

Marcello Mastroianni in The Pizza Triangle
Yves Montand in The Confession
Fernando Rey in Tristana
Robert Stephens in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

Louis, for 1973 Lead & Supporting, I would recommend seeing The Wicker Man for Edward Woodard & Christopher Lee's performances

I really love the topic of the Oscars and the awards season and I'm suffering to not participate, but I don't want to say my opinions out loud, so that it won't be boring, when I review and rank these performance on my blog.
All I can say now, is that at the day the nominees are announced, I will start doing best supporting actor of 2013. Check it out then, if you want to... :)

Luke: I would give Harris a 3.5 for Cromwell. Guinness I would give a 4.5 as I felt he became the heart of the film despite playing the insensitive monarch. He very nicely brought to life the complexities of such a character.

Luke Higham said...

Yes! another 4.5 or more for Guinness.

Louis, I asked this question before but just for ratings but aside from that, what were your thoughts for both Fassbender's performances in X Men: First Class and Prometheus

Paoloduncan said...

Some suggestions:
Frank Langella in Twelve Chairs
Trevor Howard in Ryan's Daughter
Karl Malden in Patton
George Kennedy in Airport
Romolo Valli in The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: In First Class I thought sunk his teeth into the role with great ferocity that put McKellen's Magneto to shame. I wish there had been more of David as I thought he gave a very interesting portrayal of a conniving curiosity.

I'd have suggested Timothy Dalton in 'Wuthering Heights'.
