Leon Vitali was great, only problem was that Shaw, Cazale, Von Sydow were on the top of their games, Durning was great but then disappears with no mention of him ever again which was one the only minor things that wasnt good about Dog Day Afternoon.

1)Robert Shaw
2)John Cazale
3)Max Von Sydow
4)Charles Durning
5)Leon Vitali (only just he was still great)

Great lineup! I'll go:
1. Robert Shaw
2. John Cazale
3. Max von Sydow
4. Charles Durning
5. Leon Vitali

I personally think both Durning and Cazale should've been nominated and prefer Durning to Cazale, but I think you'll rank them the other way around, obviously.

this is a great year though, I think every performance will get 4.5 or more.

What did everybody make of Ryan O Neal in Barry Lyndon cause I actually thought he was kinda miscast at times compared to the rest of the cast.

Durning is my winner this year!

I'm guessing:

1) Cazale
2) Shaw
3) von Sydow
4) Durning
5) Vitali

I'm really hoping this is another Philip Baker Hall scenario where I put the performance everyone had in dead last higher and actually was right.

Gotta be Shaw but Cazale and Durning were brilliant aswell.

mrripley: I would lean toward supporting for Sutherland although he is definitely right on the boarder. Dunaway is really supporting in it, and I thought she was fine.

... Are me and RatedRStar the only ones who liked Vitali?

Durning is my pick! Great actor in top form. It's a shame that his character just disappears in the middle of the film.

But I think your rank will be like this:

1- Shaw
2- Cazale
3- Durning
4- Von Sydow
5- Vitali

Man, I love this lineup! Such great movies and performances!

I dont think theres 2 many people that have actually seen Barry Lyndon, although its critically acclaimed its not really up there compared to Strangelove and 2001 in terms of popularity.

@RatedRStar: True. I think it's a damn shame, because I loved that movie.

Robert Shaw, perfect as always.

Yes, Barry Lyndon is one my favorite films and my second favorite Kubrick film. It's a pitty that gems like Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory or The Killing don't recieve as much attention as Dr. Stangelove or 2001 (particularly, I think 2001 is pretty boring except for the HAL storyline)

Michael Patison said...

I honestly find it hard to compare any one of his films. I honestly haven't seen Barry Lyndon or The Killing, but they are on my list. 2001, while boring in storyline, is absolutely fascinating to watch every second of its runtime. The immense differences between the genre Kubrick mastered is astonishing as well.

Robert MacFarlane said...

2001 is my "least" favorite of his efforts, but I still have genuine respect for it.

Michael Patison said...

I completely understand where everybody who doesn't love 2001, and even those who don't like it all that much, too. The first time I saw it I was bored to death and I think something caught me each successive time, but that's not to say it doesn't do the same for other people. It's nature is definitely polarizing, but it's great how it's polarizing and yet most everyone still is able to respect it.
